Who is Natural Light Candle Co. and what sets your candles apart from others?
Natural Light Candle Co. creates hand-poured candles in over 25 scents ranging from simple to complex. The candles are set apart simply by the dedication and quality that we put into each pour. They are hand-poured to make perfect scents.
Where are you located?
Springfield, MO
How did you come up with your business name?
My husband and I sat and talked about names. We tried to tie it into my name "Day", but when it came down to it, the natural element played the greatest part. Also, Natural Light Candle rolled off the tongue the best.
When and why did you decide to start your own business?
I started after my youngest son was born. I work best by myself, and have always dreamed of being my own boss. It was something I knew I could do.
How did you get started?
I love most things hand-made, and I wanted to give a unique gift. Going to a local festival I saw some soy candles. I thought they were very interesting, so researched them and made a batch. I made them as Christmas gifts, the year my youngest son was born. Those gifts turned into orders and here we are.
What motivates you to keep your business going?
I love doing it! This business works with my family. It's slower during the summer months while my kids are home, and business starts to pick up when they head back to school. For our family it's a perfect fit. I don't miss a thing with my kids, and yet I have this great business that I have created.
Do you have a new product/design you are featuring on your website?
My newest item is a box of 16 count Firestarters for $12. They are made with recycled wood chips and soy wax. You stack them with wood and kindling, light the wick, and they burn for at least 20 minutes. With gas prices going up and down, I think more people are turning to different sources of heat. More people around here are burning wood.
How do you juggle family and work at home?
It's a very flexible business for me. I work while kids are sleeping during the busy season and on weekends. However, for the most part, I can drop kids off to school, run deliveries, and be home for them when they come home. The beautiful thing about candles is that they have a long shelf life. I can make lots of stock early on to help with the madness of the Holidays.
What advice would you give to moms seeking to become a WAHM?
Don't be afraid of "failure". I tried another business when my oldest child was born. I made gift baskets. That wasn't a great fit for me. If I had a custom order to make, I had to pull my three year old son out of the park to go make it. Not fun. I also had to deal with shelf life of food items. I ate a lot of "old" chocolate. While I felt that I had failed at it, I really had learned so much from it. I could run a business, but gift baskets just didn't fit with little kids. I wasn't a afraid to try something else, and found my candle business to be a perfect fit.
