The Spot Interview with: Baby Ball Carriers

Meet the Mom Behind Baby Ball Carriers!

Who is Baby Ball Carriers? Where are you located?
Ball Baby is myself and my sister Drew and of course, my wonderful husband Sam and the kiddos. We are in Rigby Idaho, a teeny town nestled in between Rexburg and Idaho Falls.

How did you come up with your business name?
I would wear my son everywhere and people kept telling me that he looked like a little ball. So, the name Ball Baby just seemed fitting!

When and why did you decide to start your own business?
I decided to give this a go in October of 2005. I wanted to be home with my kids and I needed to help out our family financially.

How did you get started?
My husband is a police officer and I wanted to be at home with the kids, so my sister and I decided to try making a few pouches just to see what would happen. We found people in our area were starving for baby carriers, so we kept going. Then, I wanted to try designing a mei tai, something fresh and different. We developed our wide strapped, wrap like mei tai, used fun funky prints overall of the carriers, and our most popular product, the Ball Baby Overall was born!

What motivates you to keep your business going?
The baby-wearing love. I love what I do so much. I'm not just selling some product, I make beautiful carriers for parents to hold and love their babies in. I'm helping parents implement a lifestyle that is so natural and nurturing for their children. How can I not be motivated every day?

Do you have a new product/design you are featuring on your website?
Well, I just came out with two fun products. One is the Ball Baby Podeagi. It's a very different podeagi from anything out there on the market right now. Wide strapped (of course) angles and with a dramatic flared blanket, it is striking and oh so comfy.

My other pride and joy is the funky new BBO-K it's a cross between an Overall and a panel mei tai. Zany overall prints like zebra stripes paired with a Skulls panel! Very very hip and right now my favorite to wear. According to sales, they are popular for a lot of people to wear right now!

How do you juggle family and work at home?
I have a rule that my family always comes first. That is why I have a waiting list. I refuse to get so bogged down with work that I can't enjoy my little family grow up. So, I limit my sewing time per day, my website time. Some days that is hard because I really want to work and get some extra done, but I've made a commitment to my family and myself, and I intend to honor it.

What advice would you give to moms seeking to become a WAHM?
Have a clear idea of your business before you start. What exactly you want to do, how much time you want to spend daily, you financial goals. Then, prioritize your family and your job and anything else in your life. Make friends in your industry, network network network. Hold yourself and those you work with to a high ethical standard. In my experience, all of this will come back for better or for worse.
