Meet the Mom Behind Liliputians!
Who is Liliputians? Where are you located?Liliputians is an indie clothing label from NYC specializing in custom, boutique clothes for babies, infants, toddlers, little girls and boys, and even mommies too. All designs are handcrafted and limited editions.
How did you come up with your business name?
People always ask me, “Where did the name liliputians come from?” That and how to say it. Well, liliputians was chosen for a couple of reasons. First of all, I love the play on words with my daughter Lily’s name kind of being hidden inside. That only makes sense, as she is the inspiration for the brand. Gulliver's Travels was was a favorite childhood story and I particularly liked the part where he was in Liliput among the tiny Liliputians. Lastly, I also like that the name Liliputians has a history both in NYC and in children’s fashions. In 1879, Best & Company founded the Liliputian Bazaar at 60 West 23rd Street in NYC. It was a leading department store and specialized in fine children’s wear. Oh, and I almost forgot! Lilputians is said like this (lill-uh-pyoo’-shuns).
When and why did you decide to start your own business?
It really just kind of all fell into place. I have a MA in art history and have always worked full time. I knew I wanted to stay home full time when I had Lily. When I did, I felt I needed something more to keep me intellectually stimulated and challenged. I also wanted an artistic outlet. Running a web based business selling boutique children's clothing combines those needs, allows me to be there for my daughter and to also contribute to our household financially.
How did you get started?
I first started making clothes for Lily and getting stopped where ever we went with people wanting to buy similar designs. I then started selling to local boutiques and designing my web site that launched at the beginning of 2006. Last year was great for liliputians' first year and this year has been phenomenal so far with repeat business, new customers, and acquiring several new drop ship and wholesale accounts.
What motivates you to keep your business going?
I love what I am doing. This is the best and most rewarding job I've ever had. I can't wait to go to work each day!
Do you have a new product/design you are featuring on your website?
I constantly have fresh new designs on my web site. Since everything is limited editions they sell out quickly and are then replaced with new liliputians design.
How do you juggle family and work at home?
With lots of late hours, organization and multi-tasking, and a sense of humor helps.
What advice would you give to moms seeking to become a WAHM?
Do something you are passionate about and love doing. Find someway to turn your interests and loves into a business.
