Meet the Mom Behind Yellow Fence!

Who is Yellow Fence and what make you unique? Where are you located?

Yellow Fence is an online store that sells apparel and accessories for the scrapbooker. Our products are available for purchase on our website, www.yellowfence.com, and at various scrapbook stores and catalogs throughout the country.

How did you come up with your business name?

Actually, my husband came up with the name. We had a list of 25 potential business names all using a variation of the words "scrap, apparel, shirt, t-shirt, etc." and he said, "let's make it be different and stand out, let's use something like Yellow Fence." It stuck and I've had plenty of customers tell me that they remember us because of our unique name.


When and why did you decide to start your own business?

The idea for Yellow Fence came about on a long road trip. It was a combination of having been a scrapbooker for many years and, at the time, being a partner in our family run screen-printing business. It just seemed like a natural fit!

How did you get started?

We launched the site when I was 3 months pregnant with my son. We started by offering a few designs online and people loved them. Since then we've added more products and design choices and right now we're gearing up up for our 2008 new product debut.


Do you have a particular product that's unique or best seller or new or that you are promoting on your site?

We just released some new kids and baby items that are doing really well and in January we will be debuting some new color choices and designs. We also offer wholesale pricing to scrapbook stores and they can personalize their shirts with their store information on the backs.

How do you juggle family and work at home?

This is the hardest thing I've had to learn to deal with so far. I strive everyday to achieve that perfect balance and I've yet to get there. The one thing that I do is I try to get outside with my son everyday. Sometimes it's a walk to the park and sometimes it's just a quick trip to the grocery store to pick up milk. I work frantically when he naps and after he goes to bed at night so that I have more time to spend with him while he's awake. But, there are always emergencies that need to be handled or phone calls that need to be made, so I just do my best to prioritize. Oh, and we probably wouldn't eat if I didn't use my crock pot all the time!



What advice would you give to moms seeking to become a WAHM?

The best advice I was ever given is to not be afraid of failure. Your first idea may not succeed, but you will learn and grow from that experience in ways you could never imagine. Eventually you'll find your niche and success will follow.
