Interview with: The Farm Fairy

Meet the Mom Behind The Farm Fairy!

Who is The Farm Fairy? Where are you located?
My name Sandra Sarlinga and I am the founder of The Farm Fairy. The Farm Fairy is a small home based business that started three years ago while daydreaming to be at home with my two kids and at the same time to add an additional income to our house.

The Farm Fairy is located in Burlington, North Carolina.

How did you come up with your business name?
As a family we always dreamed of a farm and an old cozy farmhouse - a simple and beautiful country life. The Farm Fairy name came up while fantasizing a wish for a Farm Fairy to appear in my bedroom at night and with a light touch of her magic wand on my pillow, she would transform my city house into the farmhouse we always dreamed of. As I read on a Fairy Book called “Fun Fairy”: The chances of your dreams becoming real are good if you wish by day and dream by night, this “wishing rule” was a double inspiration, to start my own home business and to keep dreaming with our farm.

How did you get started?
Three years ago, I started attending the area Farmers Markets and our signature products then were our Herbal Jellies: Merlot & Thyme (our best seller), Orange & JalapeƱo Jelly, Orange & Rosemary Jelly, Apple Pie Jelly, Peach & Lavender and Cranberry & Lavender Jelly (both seasonal). The first year gave me the chance to meet people, make new friends and test the preferences of the customers. We are at the end of the third year now and I have grown and outgrown my expectations considering the variety of products. From the kitchen I have the Herbal Jellies and Herbal Culinary Blends. This year, The Farm Fairy gave birth to a new line of skin care products “Homemade Beauty” by the Farm Fairy which emphasizes taking good care of the skin using the best natural ingredients around (beeswax, Essential Oils, herbal infused oils, shea butter, honey), focusing on gardeners, outdoor people, farmers and any other people who wants, in their skin, the healing touch of mother nature.

What motivates you to keep your business going?
I have several sources of motivation. My family: my kids who enjoy having mom at home when they are back from school, on vacations or whenever they need me, my husband who became my right hand this year, working by my side as hard as I do and enjoying it. My customers and friends who come back every week to the market to check what’s new and with encouraging words about what I’m doing.

Do you have a particular product that is unique, a best seller or that you are promoting on your site?
I always try to keep up with the preferences of my customers. From the kitchen our Merlot and Thyme Jelly were number one when I started and is still number one, Nowadays, our Culinary Blend, a recipe we brought from Argentina (country we are original from seven years ago) called Chimichurri, is our best seller and always wows our customers and friends. Our newborn skin care line of products has been happily accepted; the herbal salves are the ones that have been the favorites so far.

How do you juggle family and work at home?
Working at home is something I always wanted to do, when my kids were born many years ago I didn’t have the chance to do it right away, when I started with The Farm Fairy, it wasn’t easy to find time to take care of the house, family and business as I would like to. But I have been blessed with a wonderful family who is there for me, encouraging me and giving me extra hands whenever I need them.

What advice would you give to moms seeking to become WAHM?
To be organized and to find a break time even when we know there are so many things to be done is the hardest part to achieve, but every single thing is a learning experience, and to use them in a positive way lets you grow as a wife, mom, friend and business person.
