Interview with: Sweet Dreams

Meet the Mom Behind Sweet Dreams!

Who is Sweet Dreams? Where are you located?
Sweet Dreams personalized nursery wall art is currently an online store. Sweet Dreams sells personalized canvas art, canvas board letters and fun whimsical wall art. What makes my site different is that my work is all original OOAK hand painted with no reproductions. Most of my clients have asked for custom work to match the décor of their room of choice. I work from my home in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada.

How did you come up with your business name?

Sweet Dreams is what I wish for my daughter to have every night when she goes to sleep. Before putting her in her crib I would tell her to have Sweet Dreams, and I guess the phrase just stuck. Every time I say SD or hear somebody inquiring about my Sweet Dreams art I get a warm fuzzy feeling knowing that my daughter was behind the creation of my own personal dream.

When and why did you decide to start your own business?
I started my business four short months ago, when every 3rd thought that ran through my mind was “how am I going to stay at home with my precious daughter”?

How did you get started?
I started my business when my daughter was just over 5 months old. She is now 81/2 months. I have always been very creative and I used to paint and sell abstract, landscape and contemporary pieces online and in retail stores. When I was pregnant with Mckenna I guess you could say my creative flair turned a new leaf. I started painting animals on Mckenna’s wall to match her bedding and décor. After I was done and the furniture was all in place, I still felt that something was missing other than my daughter of course. Ha ha. This is when I came up with Sweet Dreams personalized wall art. It’s very difficult to find original personalized paintings to specifically match your nursery or child’s room décor. Now my clients tell me the exact colors, theme and design they want and I custom create an OOAK piece for their room of choice.

What motivates you to keep your business going?
I’m sure like every other WAHM my daughter is my main motivator for getting my business established and running. Also, my very supportive and encouraging husband Sanj is always extremely helpful when it comes to taking care of our daughter. I really wouldn’t be able to do this with out the help from him.

Do you have a particular product that's unique, a best seller, or that you are promoting on your site?
I believe that all my products are unique OOAK. Currently my best seller’s are the 8” by 24” personalized canvas wall art, but another favorite is the animal wall art. It’s still early in the game (only 4 months in) so hopefully with services and opportunities such as the WHAM SPOT my business venture will only grow.

How do you juggle family and work at home?
It can be very tricky, my girlfriends who have children of their own, always ask me “How do you have the time”? But when you're passionate about something and enjoy what you're doing, I guess you just make time. I work only when my daughter is sleeping. So during her morning nap, maybe her afternoon and then once she goes to bed. Some nights I only get a few hours sleep.

What advice would you give to moms seeking to become a WAHM?
If you are passionate about something, go for it. Be confident in whatever challenge you want to take on, and know that what you are doing will only benefit your family and other families that purchase your product.
