Interview with: Nesting for Baby

Meet the Mom Behind Nesting for Baby!

Meet Cassandra Callaway Allwell, the mom behind Nesting for Baby! Located in Massachusetts, Nesting for Baby helps parents calculate just how much diapers and other essential baby products to buy for every stage of baby's growth, saving parents time, money, and many trips to the store. The calculations come very handy especially when buying in bulk and when products are on sale! The WAHM Spot had a chat with Nesting for Baby and here is what we learned from Cassandra about her unique business:

How did you come up with your business name?
My girlfriends helped me come up with the name. We were away for the weekend talking about starting our own businesses, and by the end of the weekend, I decided on the name. It is difficult to come up with a catchy name that describes the business service.

When and why did you decide to start your own business?
(It was) summer 2007 (when I started my business). When I was pregnant and during my daughter's first year, I calculated how much of "everything" we would need to care for her. One day I was in the diapers section of Babies R Us. There was a sleep-deprived couple with their newborn infant staring at all the diapers. The husband asked his wife, "how many packages do we need of newborn size?" The wife replied, "how would I know!" I really wanted to intervene and let them know how many of each type they would probably need, but I did not want to intrude. When I relayed this story to a few friends who are very familiar with my love for spreadsheets, they encouraged me to share my purchasing plans with others via the website. I decided to test the concept, rather than one day wonder "what if?"

How did you get started?
A good friend of mine offered to create the website for me, and I could not refuse his offer. Little did he know how obsessed I would become, or how elaborate my spreadsheets were. During development, I received a lot of good ideas from friends, such as the idea to offer a membership gift certificate.

What motivates you to keep your business going?
I really like spreadsheets and planning....and, recognize that others are happy to let me plan everything so that they can enjoy life.

Why should parents subscribe to your site?
The purchasing plans calculate the quantities and types of diapers, wipes, food, formula, milk, etc.. a growing child will need. With this knowledge, parents can take better advantage of coupons, free shipping with minimum purchase offers, etc.. Parents can also minimize their shopping trips by buying in bulk. Soon, I will be adding tips to help parents better organize their new lives as parents.

How do you advertise your business?
Word-of-mouth, Internet ads, parent association newsletters, etc. I just started, so it is too early to know (which advertising method works).

How do you juggle family and work at home?
Some days tremendously well, other days miserably. I do most of the website work at night after my daughter has gone to bed.

What advice would you give to moms seeking to become a WAHM?
Someone once told me to lower my expectations and increase my happiness. At first this advice sounded pessimistic to me. Why would I want to lower my expectations? I realized (with the help and support of friends) that putting things in perspective is a very important skill.
