Thank you to all my readers for your loving support and words while I went through a very rough year. I had to step away and re-focus my priorities on my family so that I can come back stronger, wiser, inspired, and transformed. To those who have been waiting patiently (if there are any out there), thank you!

In my year of absence from this blog, I had a lot of time to think about The WAHM Spot. There will be some changes. It's a new year, and this will be a better blog. It will still feature WAHMs, but the better blog will get a little more personal as it follows a WAHM in the making.

So please stay tuned as we slip into a new outfit.

How did you come up with your business name?
It’s just my name added to the types of products I love to sell

When and why did you decide to start your own business?
I decided to start my own business a couple years ago because I wanted to work part time from home so that family could still be my priority, and I love choosing gifts and home décor that I think other people will like.

How did you get started?
I had previously often sold on ebay and then I discovered an online mall called Make Mine Pink that totally inspired me because they sell all my favorite things like handpainted roses, feminine décor and lots of pink! On that site I discovered a reasonably priced web designer who made me a web template and led me to a hosting site and then I figured out how to add all the products and market it.

What motivates you to keep your business going?
I stay motivated because I love doing it!

Do you have a particular product that's a best-seller that you are promoting on your site?
I sell home décor for any style but I specialize in cottage style décor and gifts and those are my best sellers although I really sell a big mix of products.

How do you advertise your business? Which methods proved successful/effective?
I made sure I was on the major search engines, I am members of two very successful online malls; Shabby Lane Shops and Make Mine Pink and I advertise in forums and in national decorating magazines.

How do you juggle family and work at home?
It’s easy now because both of my children are in school and I am a night owl so I do some work at night after everyone is in bed.

What advice would you give to moms seeking to become a WAHM?
GO FOR IT! Research the types of products you want to sell and study other home businesses you admire.

Who is Twin Pregnancy and Beyond? Where are you located?
Twin Pregnancy And Beyond is a fun, interactive, informational online resource for parents and families who have or are expecting twins. We cover just about everything from pregnancy and birth to parenting twins and everything in-between. Including how to prepare, gear guides, personal stories, breastfeeding tips, visitor polls and some really great photos.

How did you come up with your business name?
Well, honestly, "twin pregnancy" was always the search term I used when I was pregnant with my own twins and trying to find information on the web. But, when I decided to build my own site, I didn't want the information to be just about pregnancy…Hence, the choice of Twin Pregnancy And Beyond. I felt like it left the door wide open for what could be added to the site.

When and why did you decide to start your own business?
I always wanted to start my own home based business, just lacked a great idea. So, in late 2006 following the birth of my twins, my inspiration came. After doing a bit of research, I decided to open a web based boutique specializing in clothing and gifts for twins and their families. Subsequent to it’s success in 2007, and a need to feed my own intrigue with twins, Twin Pregnancy And Beyond was born and has been growing ever since.

How did you get started?
I basically took everything I learned from my own experience with twins along with what I could gather from all around the web, in books, and from other parents and started to create an outline of what the site would finally develop into. I found a wonderful hosting platform, investigated keywords, got opinions and feedback from family and friends, and even learned a bunch of HTML and CSS code. It was lots of reading, even more typing, and still it's a work in progress.
What motivates you to keep your business going?
Truly, it's the wonderful response I get back from the parents and families. I always wanted Twin Pregnancy And Beyond to offer the best, most comprehensive "twin-specific" information and resources on the web. So, when I hear how much it has helped others going through twin pregnancy or raising twins, that's about all the motivation I need!

Anything on your site that you are promoting?
Yes! We are going to start offering some really fun and exciting twin related contests. Such as, a twin photo contest, twin story contest, and a twin birth video contest. All for a chance to win cash and prizes.

How do you advertise your site? Which methods proved successful/effective?
I do a lot of quality link exchanges, banner ads, directory submissions, and a free newsletter. I believe it’s the cultivation of all of these methods together that proves to be the most potent.

How do you juggle family and work at home?
I definitely juggle, to say the least! Having a daughter in preschool, two year old twin boys and another baby on the way doesn't leave me much down time these days. I find the need to choose my battles daily. If I can't get to the laundry because I have too many errands to run, then so-be-it. Not sweating the small stuff helps, as well as a really supportive husband.
What advice would you give to moms seeking to become a WAHM?
Whatever type of business you settle on, it should be one that you enjoy and are passionate about. Not only will it come through to your customers, it may even make you want to decalre, "I love my job!".

Who is Candles By Victoria? Where are you located?
Candles By Victoria is located in beautiful downtown Van, Texas at 209 W. Main St. We are a candle and gift shop. Candles By Victoria started in 2000 as an online business.

When and why did you decide to start your own business?
I always knew I would own my own business someday. I started Candles By Victoria in 2000 because after a year of testing I knew the candle formulation that I had created was outstanding and I had to share these candles with candle lovers everywhere!

What motivates you to keep your business going?
True love for what I do keeps me motivated and inspired every single day.

Do you have a particular product that's a best seller that you are promoting on your site?
I would say our Sampler Packs are our best sellers, but we have a brand new line called “Comfort Candles”. They are doing great and have been a huge hit.

How do you advertise your business? Which methods proved successful/effective?
I work on this non-stop. For me it is not one thing I do but a culmination of everything I do advertising-wise.

How do you juggle family and work at home?
Just like any other working mother, you get up everyday and just do it!

What advice would you give to moms seeking to become a WAHM?
Follow your dreams, find something you are passionate about, it is a cliché but if you love what you are doing, you will do well at it.

Who is Design By Esi? Where are you located?
Design by Esi is a web design studio located in North East Pennsylvania. We specialize in Custom web design, flash intros, logos and banner design.

How did you come up with your business name?
Esi is my middle name and it's the name that I'm most commonly called by close friends. I wanted a name that allowed my clients to know me by name and at the same time give a brief description of what the business is about.

When and why did you decide to start your own business?
After having my children, I wanted something that I could do that enabled me to be at home with them and also have a career at the same time.

How did you get started?
Well about 5 years ago, I sold various products online through an auction site. At times it was really challenging because I wasn't getting the exposure needed to make a great sale. I started looking into getting a website to showcase my products but found that a basic ecommerce site started from a thousand dollars or more. Being a stay at home mom trying to start a business with not much of an income, it was important to save every penny. I started putting money away and started researching as I wanted the best site for my thousand dollars. While researching, I found myself learning and going through tutorials. The more I read, the more intrigued I became and just started doing practice sites, which at the time, I felt were great but looking back now, they were very basic. I wanted to improve and eventually enrolled in a program where I studied web design.

What motivates you to keep your business going?
The challenges that my clients bring me and knowing that they are happy with their site, keeps me motivated. My family keeps me motivated.

Do you have a particular product that's unique or an offer that you are promoting on your site?
All of our websites are unique and are built based upon clients' ideas and visions.

I'm a strong advocate for work at home mothers, and know what its like to just start out from humble beginning, so we have great deals for Moms starting new businesses or moms with existing business that want to redo their web site.

How do you advertise your business? Which methods proved successful/effective?
Most of my advertising has been through word-of-mouth and I'm thankful that this interview opportunity has come along to enable me to get myself out there.

How do you juggle family and work at home?
Through serious organization. I create a schedule during the week which allows me to organize work around the children's activities and family events.

I have a very caring husband, who has supported all my endeavors. He watches the children after he gets back from work allowing me to focus more on the business.

What advice would you give to moms seeking to become a WAHM?
I definitely say 'go for it'. It does require a lot of time and patience. There are going to be many obstacles in the way, but having that sense of independence and knowing that you are going to be a positive role model to your child makes it all worth the while. Having a supportive family really help too.

Meet the Mom Behind Photo By Bonnie!

Who is Photo By Bonnie? Where are you located?
Photo By Bonnie is me, Bonnie McCann, artist and photographer. I do digital painting, including commissioned portrait paintings, fine art photography, and collage pieces. I am located in Hawaii.

How did you come up with your business name?
At the time I started the business I was doing a lot of family portrait photography and just wanted something simple, so I went with Photography by Bonnie. Once word was out and I had a web site that was photobybonnie.com I was stuck with it because my business was strictly word of mouth. Now that I'm bringing in my other art and combining things together, it seems a bit limiting. Maybe that's why my husband hates it - he knows I'm much more than a photographer.

Why did you decide to start your own business?
I was steered away from art as a career for practical reasons, but it always seemed to keep popping up in my life. When I had children I got back into photography and soon found I really enjoyed taking photos of children. When people kept commenting on the photos around my house it gave me the confidence to just go for it.

How did you get started?
I started with people I knew, offering a free photo session in exchange for my practicing on other families and children. The more I did the more I liked it. After a few years I had begun to get serious about the artistic side of photography. Once I went digital, a whole new world opened up and I taught myself PhotoShop and Corel Painter. These two programs let me incorporate my art background into my photography. I didn't realize how much I missed creating art for beauty's sake until I was doing it again.

What are your inspirations, where do you get ideas for your work?
I'm a great thief, getting ideas from everything and everywhere. Fruit in the store, a magazine ad, and of course, nothing inspires like a trip to the art academy and museum to see the masters. I don't try to recreate images I see, but rather I go somewhere and then just 'feel'. It's hard to explain, but if you look at my work, you'll see that there is no unifying theme, such as florals, or landscapes. I think it's more in my interpretation and the conveyance of my emotions that brings my work together.

What motivates you to keep your business going?
Because it brings a lot of joy to people, even those that can't afford to purchase a piece. To see people's face light up, or get emotional over a personal memory, or just keep coming back to a piece to look at it over and over. I've decided that I'm going to focus on being more daring and adventurous in my art this year, and have fun while I'm doing it. I'm not going to focus on the bottom line, or if it's sale-able.

Do you have a particular product that's unique and a best-seller on your site?
A very popular product is the Artbag. I take your images and create a whole new piece of art with it. I guarantee you will get stopped over and over by people who want to look at it. The most popular style is the Bucket Bag.

How do you advertise your business?
Word of mouth was my primary means for years. Now I do shows at galleries around Hawaii and am currently learning the many ways of web 2.0 to promote my new web site, www.bonniemccann.com. I also set a goal for myself last year to "put myself out there" at least once a month, in some way or fashion. One of these ways included an international art contest hosted by The Artful Home. I just submitted my entries and went on with other things. A few months later I found out I was in the top 10 out of over 500 entries. That was such a thrill, and a real motivator as voting was now up to the public and done online. I was kicking myself for not getting on the web 2.0 scene a few months earlier. I knew how powerful it was, but was so busy with other things that I just sent out emails to people I knew, and left it to be what it would be. In March I received a phone call that I was the grand prize winner for 2008. Winning has been the best thing for me at this time because The Artful Home is a very big company, with a print catalog of art, as well as an online presence. It pushed my thinking through to a more professional level in how I present my business, and it was also a great validation of being an artist.

Which advertising methods proved successful/effective?
Getting in front of people to discuss my work. When you have passion, and are creating art to make people feel (I personally like them to feel good, including sad memories of loved ones), you have to get personal and share. When people realize you love what you do and put that energy into everything you create, then they get excited and appreciate your work even more. Also, commissioning a portrait is very personal, so people want to get to know the person who will be painting their loved ones.

How do you juggle family and work at home?
I had good intentions at first, but then I didn't do so well. I started to focus on doing whatever I could to make sure my customers got what they wanted. I would get stressed and I short-changed my kids because my mind was elsewhere. We home school, and I was panicking about when I would cover everything I needed to with them, and school was no longer fun! I had to start saying that teaching my children was my primary job, and when everything was done for them, then I could do my own thing. It's one of the reasons I no longer do portrait photography. I re-evaluated my business and changed my focus to work that can be done whenever I am available, which is often late at night.

What advice would you give to moms seeking to become a WAHM?
Really be honest when you ask yourself why you want to do this, and does it need to be right now. If it's strictly for money, then I would see if you could achieve those goals with budgeting first. Doing a business correctly and successfully requires a lot of energy and patience. Don't expect to be successful for at least one year, three to be more realistic. Your children are more precious than anything, and before you know it, they'll be all grown up. Try to incorporate them into your business in some way, so you grow together and have fun. Let them know that you'd drop everything in a second should they need you. That "just a minute" at the computer, often turns into 20 or 30.

Meeting the Challenge of Remaining Positive

When asked what the secret to the success of her business was, Lucy Garrighan, president of Business Alternatives Inc., replied:

"I guess it is always remaining positive about what you are doing and working hard. If you believe you cannot fail, [then] most likely you won't, and working hard goes along with this. I think it is so true that ‘the harder you work the luckier you are!' We all get frustrated with difficulties, but I really believe that if you want to find the rainbow, [then] you have to put up with a little rain now and then." Garrighan adds that she constantly reminds herself that "it could always be worse." (Imprints of Success, by Amy Yard, September 2001 e-magnify.com)

Her answer inspired me to write about the value and importance of remaining positive while running your small business.

As entrepreneurs, it’s easy to get discouraged. The tricky thing about being positive is that it’s an attitude, not a feeling. It’s a state of mind that is self-induced. Yes, that right! YOU have control over whether you have a positive attitude or not. It has nothing to do with what happens to you (go to a cancer ward in your local hospital, and you’ll understand what I mean). How often do you hand that control over to someone — or something — else: Family, friends, clients, colleagues, or your bank account?

The truth is, you can allow yourself to let these external factors control you, usually causing a negative attitude, or you can CHOOSE to achieve and sustain a positive outlook. How? I believe it must be cultivated and learned. Here are 3 ways I’ve learned to keep a positive attitude:

- Surround yourself with positive things and positive people. Read a motivational book for 20 minutes each morning. Use positive affirmations. Write in a gratitude journal at the end of the day. Surround yourself with positive people that encourage you to be your best self. Set very strong boundaries with chronically negative people; protect yourself and send a message to them that you care enough about yourself to avoid negativity.
- Change your language. Instead of saying how you CAN’T do something, find ways you CAN. Speak of your less desirable personality traits in the past (“In the past, I have tended to be negative.”). This is a powerful tool, but in order for it to work, you can’t fake it. For a shift to occur, what you say must be authentic and true, just said in a positive way. This takes effort, but in time, you’ll find that you do this automatically.
- Turn a negative experience into a learning experience. There is always something good to be found in a negative situation. Search for and draw your attention to the positive. Instead of berating yourself after making a mistake, learn from the experience and move on. What did you learn about yourself or your business? What skills did you develop?

If you’re absolutely stuck in negativity and feel there’s no way out, ask a friend or hire a coach to help you gain the right perspective, get support and brainstorm together to find a resolution.

A positive attitude rubs off and clients will notice. The same is true if you’re negative, and no one likes being around someone negative. Positive people seek those who are positive, so ask what kind of people do you want to attract (or repel)?

The effort is well worth it. You’ll enjoy higher productivity, better relationships, better health and you’ll be happier.

Who is SavvyGirl & Company? Where are you located?
SavvyGirl & Company is cute little sassy, spunky and oh so savvy handmade jewelry business located in San Diego, CA. All pieces are handmade here in San Diego and we take great pride in creating all of our pieces to be unique, fun and different. All pieces are on a limited basis and go very quickly so, when you see something you like, don’t delay or it could be gone!

How did you come up with your business name?
SavvyGirl & Company comes from my oldest daughter who is named Savannah – as a baby I always called her SavvyGirl and it just felt right when putting our company together. My daughters are a major source of my daily inspiration and it just works.

When and why did you decide to start your own business?
I had been fortunate enough to enjoy a long career in the outside professional world but always dreamed of owning my own company. When Savvy came along, I always knew that I would make the choice to stay at home with my family and leave the corporate world behind. Fashion, designing and jewelry has always been a passion of mine so I combined it all together and SavvyGirl & Co. was born!

How did you get started?
I had always kept designs stored away, mostly in my mind, but I began attending bead and jewelry shows in LA and San Francisco, making contacts with vendors, and little by little, one by one – pieces were made and began to sell. Funny Story, my dad (recently retired from a long career) was visiting one week to see our new arrival, Savannah, and I put him to work in the assembly line – he loved it and became addicted at least for the week – he was a great help to me!!

What motivates you to keep your business going?
I love creating and designing. That is a challenge in and of itself to keep going but most of all, I love seeing the joy each piece brings to my clients. I love how a simple piece of jewelry can change outfit and bring the simplest of shirt to life!

Do you have a particular product that's a best-seller on your site?
I have one piece that keeps selling over and over again – it’s called the Confetti bracelet! The design is so simple yet so cute, versatile and fun. It came to me early in the morning – it actually woke me up and I went right to work. Ever since then, it has been a hit!

How do you advertise your business? Which methods proved successful/effective?
I have never done any formal advertising – for six years it has been through word of mouth and since I started my blog in January 2008 to promote my business it has proven to be very effective.

How do you juggle family and work at home?
That is a very tough question – it’s hard to juggle both family and work. Balance, Balance and Balance!! I really try to work early in the morning and late at night after my girls are in bed. My girls and family are always my priority so, work comes after them – it seems to work out pretty well – I hope!

What advice would you give to moms seeking to become a WAHM?
Stay true to yourself – do what works best for you and never stop reaching for your goals and dreams. They will come true with hard work and dedication. Surround yourself wit positive and supportive people.

Who is PopArtBabies.com? Where are you located?
PopArtBabies.com is an online boutique gift shop with a creative services twist. The process is simple. A customer selects from over 70 Artwork Styles and nearly 90 distinct gifts—everything from handcrafted silver jewelry to chocolates. The PopArtBabies.com Art Department creates original custom artwork based on the customer’s own uploaded image. The customer approves a proof, the item goes into production, and the finished product arrives on their doorstep shortly thereafter.

How did you come up with your business name?
Pop art (and pretty much anything visually fun) is our passion. Babies and kids are our inspiration. So we married the two and it was a no-brainer.
When and why did you decide to start your own business?
I’ve been in the freelance Graphic Design/Web Design business for the last couple of years, following the birth of my first child and some years in the corporate world prior. PopArtBabies.com came into being in 2008. It just seemed to be a natural outgrowth of my design business, The Pixelle LLC (http://www.thepixelle.com). With my freelance creative services experience, I was able to take an idea simmering in the back of my head and make it a reality. The PopArtBabies.com concept is something I’m passionate about and it makes me to so happy to hear my customers get so excited when their gifts arrive. There’s just no better feeling. And like every other WAHM, being able to be there when my family needs me is the greatest reward of all.

What motivates you to keep your business going?
I love what I do. I love hearing/reading about how PopArtBabies.com creations make people happy. I love having a sense of control over my work and life. I love not wasting my time/energy on petty corporate politics and being able to focus on the job at hand: creating awesome art to put on fabulous products and making someone’s day.
Do you have a particular product that's a best-seller on your site?
It’s a virtual smorgasbord as to the gift items that we offer. Everyone has different tastes and we see that reflected in our sales. One day the Rubik’s Cube® is hot. The next it’s the handcrafted silver jewelry that’s catching everyone’s eye. The story is a little different when it comes to the Artwork Styles, though. The classic multi-panel pop art designs in the bright color palettes have been far and away the favorite among our customers, followed by the daisies. There’s really something for everyone!

How do you advertise your business? Which methods proved successful/effective?
Word of mouth from our own customers and from their friends/family who have seen their custom gifts has been our most effective advertising to day. We’ve done some of the more traditional methods, but we find that actually getting out there and talking to real people is what works for us. We like to be social butterflies. We hang out on myspace (http://www.myspace.com/popartbabies) and Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/pages/PopArtBabiescom/21160133347) and try to remember that there’s a world outside of our 4 walls in here.
How do you juggle family and work at home?
Despite working out of my house, most days my little boy is in daycare. With the demands of what will amount to 4 businesses by the end of the year, it’s the only way I can manage it all. I love that he gets to interact with a group of little ones near his age and socialize outside of our small family. It provides him with certain experiences that I don’t feel I’m able to provide as one person at home.

I have to say that I don’t think I’m all that great of a juggler when it comes to family/work. I’m either Mommy or I’m a business owner. If I try to do both at the same time, I’m not doing either well and that’s not acceptable. When my son is in daycare, I’m there for my customers 110%. In the mornings, evenings, and every other time I’m Mommy, I’m there 110%. I appreciate and value each moment of my day because I’m able to devote myself completely to the role I’m playing at that time.

What advice would you give to moms seeking to become a WAHM?
You have to love it, whatever “it” is. You have to love it so much that working hard at it doesn’t really feel so much like “work”. If you don’t love it, don’t even try it. Not everyone will succeed. But with love as the main ingredient, that’s hardly a recipe for failure.

Free Newspaper Advertising: How to Get Your Business On the Front Page

Everyone loves free advertising. In some ways it is the Holy Grail of business. But it has to be effective advertising seen by many people. One of my favorites is a newspaper article about your business. This is an elusive goal, and it can be difficult to achieve. Sometimes, it is just being in the right place at the right time. However, there are some basic techniques you can put into play to help position your business for exposure. I have personally used them to get 3 different articles written and published. These techniques have even put me on the evening news. And best of all, it only costs you some time and effort.

The key to this method is letting journalists know your business exists. I do not believe in waiting for someone to notice me. I prefer to tell them I am there. Realistically, journalists are always for a good story. Just tell them why you or your business would be a good story. Try to look at your business from an outsider's perspective. Why are you special? How does your business improve the lives of your customer? Maybe you are the first one in your area to do what you are doing. Maybe you are about to celebrate an anniversary or milestone in your business. Have you recently received an award? Find something special about your business that is newsworthy. You are excited about your business, otherwise you would not be doing it. Share that excitement. Do not expect someone else to decide what it is about your business that is exciting. Make it something that sparks the journalist's interest.

Once you have your concept, all you have to do is email them. Go to the websites of all your local papers and find the email addresses of journalists in the appropriate sections of the paper. For instance, if you want your business splashed across the front page of the entertainment section, find a journalist (or two or three) in that section. Email addresses are usually found under the "Contact Us" link on the website. Collect lots of addresses. The more people you let know about your "news," the better chance you will have of being picked up.

Now comes the tricky part. You have to grab them with your subject line. Try to imagine yourself at their desk, opening your email, and try to decide which emails grab your attention. What would you want to read? What would whet your appetite? This is your opening line. Make it your best.

The body of your email should be short and sweet. If you do grab their interest, you do not want to lose it with a long, drawn out email. And if they are not interested, you do not want to waste your time typing. Give them one or two paragraphs about why your business is newsworthy, and then give them a link to find out more information. If they think the story is newsworthy, they will follow your trail.

Once you have emailed everyone you can find, just sit back and wait. But do not wait too long. It is common knowledge in the marketing world that it takes four to seven exposures for people to recognize your name or business. Do not send out one email to your list and expect something to happen. (Of course, it can! But do not be too disappointed if it does not.) Make a schedule for yourself and send out emails to your list every two months or so. Find a way to tie your business in with a holiday. Or make a big deal about how much your business has grown. It does not matter if when you say you doubled the number of people in your organization within your first year in business, you mean that you went from three to six. Keep your email subject lines exciting but relevant. And be persistent. You never know when a news story will relate to your business. And when it does, you want journalists to know your name and how to contact you rather than your competition. Good luck. I hope to read about you soon!

Who is Buttercup Headbands? Where are you located?
Buttercup Headbands is a headband company that focuses on comfort. A headband that is soft, stylish and washable. No plastic to poke you, no elastic to stretch out & easy to use. I sew & develop the headbands to meet the needs of my customers out of my home office in La Habra, CA.

How did you come up with your business name?
I chose the name Buttercup Headbands because as a child growing up in Minnesota I loved picking wild buttercups that grew in the field next to our house. They are my favorite wildflower, so cheery and soft. Now that I live in the concrete jungles of Southern California I miss those little flowers.

When and why did you decide to start your own business?
I decided to start my business when I was at home with my son doing all the usual mom things-laundry, playing hide & seek, vacuuming up goldfish cracker crumbs and just couldn’t seem to find something to comfortably keep my hair out of my face. I tried all the typical torture devices on the market-plastic headbands hurt, ponytails hurt after a few hours and elastic ones would stretch out. I wanted to look stylish with very little effort; I am afraid to admit it but I don’t even own a hairdryer. So I decided if I could not find what I wanted I would make it myself so the idea to start a business was born.

How did you get started?
I had a gift card left over from Christmas so I used it to purchase an $80.00 sewing machine and some fabric scraps and set out to make headbands that I could use every day. I spent hours on my little sewing machine playing with fabric and poking myself with pins until I created a headband that I could wear all day comfortably and even sleep in it. My friends loved them and with a little encouragement from them I decided I could start up a business. Little did I know what an adventure it would be, I used the internet to find out about how to create a website, apply for my patent and how to get started with building a business.

What motivates you to keep your business going?
I love working with fabrics and the fact that I can be at home with my son and enjoying all the little things like checking out all the local parks or making a craft project together is the biggest reward.

How do you advertise your business?
Getting the word out about my business has been the hardest part. I currently attend craft shows, pass out business cards and use word of mouth to promote my business. I am just now learning the ropes about how to market my product & how to write a press Release.

How do you juggle family and work at home?
I do most of my work after my son goes to bed. In the morning I wait for the coffee to kick in and I make a list of all the business tasks and family tasks to be done that day and schedule play dates/fun outings for the day. I carry a notebook everywhere I go to jot down everything from grocery lists to new business ideas. I also have a really great husband & in-laws and they help keep my son occupied when I need to run a business related errand.

What advice would you give to moms seeking to become a WAHM?
The hardest part is just taking the leap to start a business. It can be scary to venture into unknown territory. I am constantly inspired by other moms who have started a home based business. The best book I read was Mommy Millionaire by Kim Lavine, she wrote all about her experiences while starting a business and trying to be supermom at the same time. Reading about other WAHM struggles and successes lets you know that you are not alone and that you can do this business thing.

Three Reasons to Write Tips Articles for Your Home Business

When I first began writing article a few years ago, I received a lot of advice. Some of it was very helpful – like, always write in a conversational tone. Other advice hasn't been so useful.

Among the not-so-helpful advice was this nugget: "Don't waste your time writing tips articles. They won't be popular for much longer."

Tips articles are easy to recognize. They usually start out with "Top Ten Ways to..." or "Five Simple Steps to..."

There are a lot of them around, but tips articles seem to be as popular as ever. I read them in my daily newspaper, they're run in magazines... even the nightly news show I watch sometimes gives tips sent in by viewers.

When I do an Internet search because I want to know how to do something, like how to housebreak my new puppy or get the chocolate stain out of my white blouse, I'll probably look for a tips article to help me out.

There are a few reasons why you need to write tips articles for your business:

1. They're easy to write. To write a tips article, begin by making a list of your best tips on how to do something your target audience is interested in. Top ten lists are popular, but if you can't think of ten items, just list seven, five, or even three. Then write a short paragraph about each item you just listed. There's the body of your article!

2. They're easy for your audience to read. Lists and short chunks of text are easier to read online than are long paragraphs, which means tips articles are perfect for online reading. Make each new tip into a separating heading, to break up the text.

3. People like to read tips articles. Your audience is looking for information that is easy to read and understand. A tips article gives them what they need in a tidy little package.

When you regularly give your target market valuable information, like useful tips articles, over time they will learn to trust your expertise. Which means, when they're ready to buy your product or service, they're more likely to trust you with their money too.

How did you come up with your business name?
The Name “Cuddles Kids Bedding Boutique” was developed in response to my work with kids. My career for the past 14 years has been to provide psychotherapy to children victimized by child abuse. For years, I noticed a commonality that existed with most of these children, a desire or need to be nurtured, loved, held in a safe and loving environment. While it would never have been appropriate for me to “cuddle” my clients, I always appreciated the importance of this need. “Cuddle Kids” reflects my appreciation, respect and understanding of this simple but important action all children desire from the adults in their life.

When and why did you decide to start your own business?
Cuddles Kids Bedding Boutique had our “Grand Opening” May 2008. After the birth of my son, Micah, I had the awesome revelation that many mothers have..."I just need to be home with him." My husband, the accountant, helped me to understand that this “revelation” was just not financially feasible. I then began the “mad search” to find alternative ways to meet both of our goals, to contribute to our household finances and to be present and available to my son during these early and formative years of his life.

How did you get started?
I first studied the retail market by doing an extensive amount of research, then worked on developing my skill set and testing the children's bedding market by opening a store on ebay. I faced many challenges that I suppose many new store retailers experience and had to quickly work on my accounting skills. The retail market is very different from the field of psychotherapy. But I was able to use my communication skills to calm disgruntled customers or develop decent communication with an unreasonable vendor.

What motivates you to keep your business going?
There are a number of factors that help to motivate me to work at unreasonable hours, sacrifice personal or “me” time, and multi-task like crazy, but I suppose the most important is the precious time I have with my son during his most formative years. I realized when my husband and I made the decision for me to be home part-time that sacrifices would be required. And watching him grow and develop into such a dynamic individual has been well worth it!

Do you have a particular product that's a best seller and that you're promoting on my site?
I am sure most online retailers believe they sell the most dynamic products and we feel the same. We have several products that are great top sellers which include the Dream Baby Safety Gates, Whistle & Wink Baby Crib Bedding, Freckles Bedding for kids and Briar Patch children's hand made furniture. How do you advertse your business?
We quickly learned when we entered this online retail profession that successful marketing advice was hard to come by if you wanted “free” information or we were constantly bombarded with solicitations from SEO companies that wanted to charge a small fortune for advice and service. We have gained helpful information from companies like SEO Logic and Web CEO, which provide useful tips on SEO optimization and we use products and services from Google and Yahoo who host our ecommerce store. We currently advertise using the following methods: online pay-per-click, blogging, advertising on mom-related sites, email marketing, and local marketing at mom-oriented coffee houses and other kid friendly stores.
How do you juggle family and work at home?
This venture of opening an online retail store has been quite challenging, especially with regards to juggling my time between husband, son and self. I am very fortunate to have a husband who in addition to being an accountant is always so supportive, understanding and helpful. His favorite catch phrase, “no money, no love” playfully reflects the many long hours of working well into the early morning. I do though struggle with feeling overwhelmed and guilty at times when my son is talking to me and I am preoccupied about the business, when my husband and I share few words over the course of several days because of my work, or I look down to see the raggedy pedicure that's weeks old. But my passion for this business and the belief in success keeps me moving forward.

Any advice you'd like to share with WAHMs?
The best advice I could give is to believe in yourself and the passion that motivates your business venture. In the end, your passion will propel you to work the long, late hours at night despite feeling exhausted and overwhelmed. Many seasoned experts advised me to focus on selling products based on their profit value. For me, it would have been really hard to stay up to 2:00am, after taking care of my son all day, to work on a business selling safety hats or something like this, if I didn't have a passion for “safety hats”.

The next time you meet a first-time customer treat him as a king and make the first impression strong and positive. This strong image you create within the mind of the customer will stay and continue to bring you business forever unless you destroy the image by your own fault.

However one of the common errors many home businesses do is ignoring the importance of customer service after the first time. The customer expects the standards delivered at the beginning of the relationship and if the business fails to achieve it, they can question the validity of the image built, consequently destroying the hard earned positive business image.

Attention to detail is your winning mantra

It should be noted that every step you take and decision you make within your business model will contribute in some way to determine your business image. Therefore even a simple thing such as answering a customer inquiry can result in negative image being built, if not handled carefully. Just imagine how many times you have called people in customer service units of well known companies and got put off by their pure ignorance.

Advertising can make or break your image

Advertising can be used to build the business image you intend. This is particularly useful to cultivate your image in the minds of those who get to know you for the first time. However as much as it can build your image it can destroy it as well. You have to live up to what you preach and if not it doesn’t take that long to develop negative image which is extremely harmful and generally very difficult to reverse.

Further consistency in advertising is another important aspect. Unless your messages are consistent and clearly support one strong business image, you could lead your customers to confusion. So make sure that you weave the same message in all your advertising efforts.

In essence, any business needs to develop positive image within the minds of its stakeholder if it is to succeed. It can take years to build your image but it all can get destroyed in one minute due to your negligence. So take care of the image of your business and remember it needs continuous attention.

How did you come up with your business name?
Well…it’s not super original, my name, lily, is how I sign the back of all my jewelry and the bottom of all my pots, it only seemed natural to call it “lily pottery."
When and why did you decide to start your own business?
I had been in a position as the Marketing Director of a company straight out of college. When I realized I was able to market for a company, (that I really didn’t LOVE the product, nor was I passionate about) and be successful at it, it hit me…I have a great product that is original, I can market it and possibly be successful, so I went for it!

How did you get started?
I began making jewelry for my sister, mom and me. We wore it everywhere and when we began to get compliments on our jewelry. I had my first order from a friend of mine who was getting married, I had never met his fiance, but she saw my jewelry online and love it, so she ordered a set for all of her bridesmaids. I was so nervous! I had never met her or any of her friends, so when I flew to California for the wedding and saw that all of the girls like the jewelry and went on and on about how “original and different it was,” I realized “I just might have something…” so, it began….

What motivates you to keep your business going?
I LOVE what I do. The amazing thing about being an entrepreneur, is that if you TRULY love what you’re doing, this natural drive and energy comes from loving what you do, pouring your life into it, and watching it grow. It’s really amazing!

What are your inspirations, where do you get ideas for your work?
I know it seems to be a bit “cliché”, but I am truly inspired by nature. Whether it’s my wildflower and herb garden in the back yard, or the beautiful textures from the lichens and moss on the pecan tree trunks in my yard. The organic beauty that is so natural and not contrived in nature inspires the hand-carved stamps used on my necklaces and pottery.

Do you have a particular product that's a best-seller on your site?
The “vintage garden” necklaces and earrings are my “best sellers.” I can’t seem to keep them in stock.

How do you advertise your business?
I send out postcards and email fliers each month for my shows. I also blog. Blogging has opened up a whole new world that’s just amazing! I am getting ready to launch my fall catalog with my new fall line. It’s my first catalog, so I guess we’ll see how effective it is…

Which advertising methods proved successful/effective?
Blogging really has opened up so many doors to connect with other artists and creative types. It’s really an amazing way to advertise as well…and the best part…it’s FREE!

How do you juggle family and work at home?
I do have to keep things organized and separate. It’s very easy to become consumed with my business, but my family comes first and I never would have made it as far as I have without them and all of the support they give. I constantly remind myself of that and work hard to keep my priorities straight.

A few years ago, Laura and Jen were busy first grade teachers. How did you come up with your business name?
That was quite a process! We knew we wanted an animal for our logo and being teachers, we naturally loved alliteration. We came up with the word “gifted” because it had a double meaning; our products were indeed gifts, but the children who received them would be “gifted” for reading them. We loved the thought of a wise grasshopper reading a book for a logo so The Gifted Grasshopper was born.

When and why did you decide to start your own business?
People were always asking us what books to buy as gifts for a baby shower or birthday party. Jen commented about how we should be able to make money from giving out such advice. Laura repeated this comment to her husband, he said “Then why don’t you?”. They took him up on his challenge and the website was up and running a few short months later.

How did you get started?
Laura’s husband drew up the business plan and soon they were off and running, visiting web designers, creating a logo and crafting the signature Gifted Grasshopper Tote. The idea was conceived in March and we were ready to fill orders in September.

What motivates you to keep your business going?
Jen and I really believe in what we are doing. We have a passion for children’s books and know that parents are overwhelmed when looking for books for their little ones. We enjoy the feedback we get from parents who say the books in their Gifted Grasshopper tote are the first books that are requested each day.

Do you have a particular product that's a best-seller on your site?
Our New Baby bags are definitely our best sellers. Perfect for a shower or “”Welcome to the world” gift, they are filled with titles that will keep the squirmiest infant interested.

How do you advertise your business? Which methods proved successful/effective?
Jen and Laura find that they are the most successful promoters of The Gifted Grasshopper. Getting out into the community and talking about their passion for quality children’s books has proven to be the best advertisement.

How do you juggle family and work at home?
Lots of work before the kids get up, after they go to sleep and during naptimes!

What advice would you give to moms seeking to become a WAHM?
Be creative and find something you are passionate about. Jen and Laura never get tired of discussing new books they have found and that’s what keeps the day to day of running the business interesting and fun.

Meet the Mom Behind Candy Purse!

Who is Candy Purse? What makes your purses and products so unique?
Candy Purse is a punky and sweet couture line of handmade fashion accessories. I design leather handbags from scratch and add beautiful touches. Such as hand-painted and hand-drawn detail. Some bags that I design come with accents of real Python and lamb skin. I have a line of bags that come with handcrafted pure silver pendant necklaces adorned with diamonds,yellow Sapphire and other precious stones. Another line that comes with vintage beads and findings. These necklaces can be taken off the bag and worn. I also do embellishments, and hand-painted detail on jeans, tee's, hoodies and tanks. Each pair of jeans comes with JBJ jewelry (jewelry box junky). Candy Purse creates other cool stuff like belts, leather cuffs, necklaces and earrings. What makes my products unique is the fact that I don't make two of the same thing. Every single item that I create is only one of one. When it comes to the embellishments, the art work remains one-of-a-kind.

How did you come up with your business name? Where are you located?
My name is Candy Short for Candace. As a child I loved candy (and still do as an adult). Any time I paint or draw something it is bold and colorful and tasty to the eye. Color is beautiful and God, my Lord and Savior made color. So I took all of those factors and strive to make really cool accessories that no one has ever seen before. I live in a really cool and posh city called Allen, TX which is about 20 miles north of Dallas. Ok, not every part is posh. I live on the East side, which is still nice.

When and why did you decide to start your own business?
Well, it was my only option from dropping out of college. I struggled a lot in the not so creative areas of college. You know math and stuff ( me and math don't get along). I had to take a silly state test so that I could move forward with my major. I never could pass that darn math section. So I prayed about it and ask the Lord what I should do. I was lead to start my own business. It was a freelance design business called Design Revolution. Then I decided to venture into fashion with no formal training at all.

How did you get started?
I studied Graphic Design, Drawing and Painting. A perfume box was my inspiration. I could not bring myself to throw it away. An idea popped into my head to turn it into a purse. I wore it out, got an insane amount of compliments. I made more and added different styles to my line.

Boutique after boutique began picking them up along with my jewelry.

What motivates you to keep your business going?
I am constantly inspired by what is around me. Creating is in my blood and it is who I am. Besides, it helps me keep my sanity. My kids try everyday to make me crazy. I say Lord, please keep me creative and loving for my family's sake. You know that children can be a blessing and a curse. I get a bit of both from my 3 crazy kiddos. I love them so much and they are part of the reason why I do what I do.

How do you advertise your business? Which methods proved successful/effective?
I make TV appearances, I send my wares to magazines and they give me shout outs and show off my punky and sweet artables.

I need some help with the high end magazines. For some reason they don't give a chick love. What's up with that?

How do you juggle family and work at home?
Well, I lock the kids in the closet and throw in some toys and snacks and tell them mommy has to work. When my husband gets home I tell him that he needs to cook because he has it so good being able to leave the house to work. That man is so stinkin' lucky! No, just kidding, ok, that wasn't funny. You know you want to laugh.

But seriously, It can be a little difficult at times. My husband totally supports me. I have to travel a couple of times a year. He takes off about 4 days from work just so I can do business. He is such wonderful encouraging man, and it doesn't hurt that he looks good. I take care of the kids during the day. At nap time I work, and get other things around the house done. At night I stay up a little after my husband goes to bed.

What advice would you give to moms seeking to become a WAHM?
Make sure that you have a good support system. Get a routine down as best as you can.

Try not to work while your children are awake. If you don't want grey hair early, keep this advice to heart and take it. Make sure your product or service is of the highest quality you can afford.

This is so embarrassing but I have to share it. Back in the day when I first made my purses out of boxes (not cigar boxes), I did not use the best of materials. I had no idea what I was doing at the time. I just loved to make purses and people liked buying them. Well I went in to a very high end boutique in Dallas. You can find Jessica Simpson and Angie Harmon shopping there from time to time. As I was showing the manager my wares, the strap of the purse broke and beads went everywhere. She was so shocked and just flat out told me no. My face turned red and I bolted out of there so fast that I just left the beads on the floor. My friend Jennifer was with me we both laughed and cried at the same time.

How did you come up with your business name?
Beyond The Bomb was actually a name a fellow boutique owner, Bambina Ballerina, came up with. When I heard it I just loved it. I think it fits the theme well as we do not just sell traditional bath bombs. We also carry an Organic Line, a Specialty Line of bath bombs that look good enough to eat, a Child's Line that turns bath time into fun time and a Favors/Gifts Line for those special moments in your life. We hope, in the future, to expand to other bath products as well which would fit perfect with our theme and name of "Beyond The Bomb".

When and why did you decide to start your own business? How did you get started?
Beyond The Bomb launched in the Spring of 2008. As a mom myself of 2 young children, and one that hated bath time, I was trying to find a way to make bath time more fun for them besides the traditional toys. I experimented with bath bombs and they loved them! It's magic to them dropping one into the tub and watching it dissolve and fizzle away. So from there I made more child shaped bombs and then started concentrating on myself. As we all know, moms definitely need time to wind down and there is nothing better than a warm bath at the end of the night. A bath bomb makes that bath time a unique and healthy experience.

What motivates you to keep your business going?
My daughters! My daughters are so spoiled at bath time now there is no way I could stop...hehe. They run to my stash of bath bombs every night to pick one out for bath time. It's fun and it makes them want to take a bath. Plus I love being creative with them so it's fun!

Do you have a particular product that's a best-seller on your site?
Yes! Our best-sellers are actually our Organic Bombs. Mainly because of the health benefits attached to it. I mean really, who wouldn't rather give their child a bath instead of smear them with cream if it works? What woman would rather workout instead of take a bath with our cellulite reducing bomb?

How do you advertise your business? Which methods proved successful/effective?
Networking is the best way. There are a lot of WAHM and mom-owned businesses out there that need help getting their name out. Exchanging links, having giveaways and product reviews so others can actually use and try them and give their readers an idea of what it's actually like and I advertise locally in Day Spas.

How do you juggle family and work at home?
Juggling both is a definite challenge as I also work part-time from home as well in addition to my business. I've come to learn it is really all about schedules and priorities. My part-time job is a scheduled shift, so my children spend quality time with my husband then. When I am done working that job I go straight to working on my business, either networking or producing products. It happens to be nap time then so my children are sleeping and my husband goes to work. When they wake up it's family time and I concentrate all my time on them until bedtime. Depending on the night, I then work more on my business or blog (http://LifeofanInternetMom.blogspot.com), take time to myself or have quality time with my husband. It proves to be a challenge some days but is definitely rewarding in many aspects.

What advice would you give to moms seeking to become a WAHM?
Don't give up! It is hard work and is frustrating in the beginning until you get your niche. However, if you are like me where it was important to have my children with me all day then it is the best solution. Use your creativity, network, find a mentor of such to help you through and have fun! There are many forums to help those just starting out. My favorites are The Mom Pack and Mom Dot.

Who is Jaybird Designs? Where are you located?
My name is Jennifer J. Cirka and I am the designer behind Jaybird Designs. I create unique custom crocheted items with a focus on children's clothing and accessories. I also love to create baby blanket sets and accessories for women too! Since 2007, I have also been selling my original crochet patterns and have been published in numerous major crochet magazines. How did you come up with your business name?
I am of the age where Jennifer was a VERY POPULAR name among girls. I have always had nicknames throughout my life, one of them being Jaybird.

When and why did you decide to start your own business?
When my daughter was 9 months old I quit working outside the home. This put a huge financial burden on my family, so I wanted to do something that might help bring money in....or at least enough money to pay for my hobby!

How did you get started?
I began by selling gently used children's clothing on eBay. Then, one day, the eBay custom boutique world was introduced to me. I thought I'd give it a try.....and am very happy that I did!

What motivates you to keep your business going?
Loving what I do and the excitement of seeing where I can take it for the next step.

Do you have a particular product that's a best-seller on your site?
My original crochet patterns are definitely my best seller! It seems many people these days want to "Do it themselves." I love seeing what others make from my designs.

How do you advertise your business? Which methods proved successful/effective?
I'm still new at advertising, especially since I am on a very limited advertising budget. Mainly, my best method is word of mouth....by others using my patterns and showing other what they have created from them through sites such as Ravelry.com and Crochetville.com.

How do you juggle family and work at home?
I'm not really sure, but I do think it will get easier once my little girl goes to Kindergarten in the fall!

Be sure it is something you love and that your family supports you!

How did you come up with your business name?
My daughter was my muse and inspiration for all of my designs. Her name is Mia Anabelle, so the name of the company evolved to Mia Belle. This is in honor of my muse as well as a play on words in different languages, Mia meaning mine in Italian and Belle meaning Beautiful in French.

When and why did you decide to start your own business?
I come from a family of entrepreneurs. My family immigrated from Russia when I was 9 and my father was my role model in terms of overcoming cultural and monetary obstacles to become a successful business owner. I went to business school and I always knew that owning my own business is the path that I want to take. It wasn’t until my daughter was born in 2006 that I knew exactly what kind of business it would be. Although I have to say that I minored in Apparel and merchandising, and fashion and design were always of particular interest to me.

How did you get started?
As a young mom I came across a lot of really nice products but eventually I started adding my own little modifications to products or making new products all together to accommodate my daughter. I became a regular at Jo Ann fabrics and started making all kinds of things for my daughter. What motivates you to keep your business going?
I find that with every success and reached milestone, I feel extremely fulfilled. There is nothing like starting from scratch and seeing your vision and dream materialize. It gives me a real sense of accomplishment and self worth.

I find that people in the industry are very open to new products and just a simple phone call to a boutique can generate future business. The more doors you knock on the better chances are that the right people will notice you.

How do you juggle family and work at home?
It’s always a juggling act and you have to be really good at multi-tasking. I have a really solid support network from my family and my husband who always encourage me to go after my dreams and believe in me. Having a really amazing nanny is also very helpful to a mom who has an active toddler and mounds of work.

What advice would you give to moms seeking to become a WAHM?
When you get an idea that feels right to you as if you are in sync with the universe and your intuition is guiding you in that direction, you just need to go for it. You don’t always know where the road will lead you, but if you believe in yourself and your idea and your work ethic is good, you can follow and live your dream.

How did you come up with your business name?
I love the color Pink!

When and why did you decide to start your own business?
I started out making diaper and towel cakes for family and friends. I kept hearing, “you should do this as a business!” After taking a small business class and completing A LOT of research I decided to take the plunge.

How did you get started?
I did a lot of research, mostly on diaper cakes…then my search spread to baby boutiques in general. There are a lot of “interesting” looking items for sell out there. I wanted my products to appeal to stay at home mommies, single women, grandmas and local high end boutiques. After deciding that yes, this is what I wanted to do. I formed a business plan, sought out a lawyer and formed a LLC, purchased software, inventory, etc. Then the picture taking/editing marathon began…then uploading everything onto my web site. All the behind the scenes work took about 5 months. Sassy Pink Boutique officially opened May 1, 2008!

What motivates you to keep your business going?
My love for creating adorable items!

Do you have a particular product that's unique, a best-seller, and/or that you are promoting on your site?
I think I carry a lot of unique items. Our best seller by far is the washcloth candies, hair clips, tutus and cupcake bath bombs. What makes our items different from others is the presentation and attention to detail. All of our items are beautifully packaged and are ready for gift giving when you receive them in the mail.

How do you advertise your business? Which methods proved successful/effective?
I advertise through my local mommies groups, blog directories, celebrity gift baskets, product reviews and give-aways. I think word of mouth is a wonderful tool. I’ve been open for about two months now, so I’m hoping the word is spreading!

How do you juggle family and work at home?
I check my email early in the morning before my son gets up and then I’m back on the computer or filling orders during his nap time. That’s about the only big chunk of time I get. I have logged in a lot of late nights as well.

I’m finding that it can be very difficult to juggle both…I want to give time to my family but also grow and promote my business which means lots of networking and time on the computer. Keeping to strict work hours seems to be the key and not letting your mind wander to work related items while spending time with the family!

What advice would you give to moms seeking to become a WAHM?
Go for it! Keep your expectations realistic and make sure you have a strong support system.

Being born and raised in Texas and that fact that I knew I only wanted to offer the strongest scented candles and knowing that my candles truly have 3 to 4 times the amount of fragrance compared to most candles in today’s market that triple scented candles just had to be in the name so Texas Triple Scented Candles just came to mind and it stuck.

When and why did you decide to start your own business?
I previously owned Teri’s Treasures a unique gift and candle shop in Porter, Texas . My candles were sold as Teri’s Triple Scented Candles at the time and they were the store's bestsellers. After closing the store I offered my candles to friends and family for gifts not realizing it was the start to a new business. My family would tell me Teri you really need to find a way to sell your candle again they are the best candles. How did you get started?
The way I got started making candles was from the support of my family. On one of my birthdays my family (husband, kids, sister, in laws) worked together and invested in just about everything I would need to start making my own candles. They knew I had always wanted to make and create candles. I started out making candles for friends and family as gifts, and upon request only after tons of trial and error, I developed the strongest scented candles you will ever burn now known as Texas Triple Scented Candles.

What motivates you to keep your business going?
I love creating candles and meeting people. We offer custom made candles so we are always making something new and exciting, no 2 candles are identical because each candle is homemade & hand poured with care.

We have found the most effective method is when we have the opportunity to meet our customers in person, serve and befriend them. Many of our candle customers have also become our good friends.

It is always a struggle some days are better than others but always a struggle. I have always believed something worth having is something you have to work hard for. I can’t think of anything more important than my family and then my goals of making our Texas Triple Scented Candles a household name.

Never give up, don’t let the doubts of others cloud your dreams and never give up.

Who is My Treasure Box? What kind of products does your business offer? Where are you located?
My Treasure Box is a company that designs deluxe, hand crafted scrapbook photo albums for life altering occasions such as Baby, Wedding, Bar/Bat Mitzvah, School Days, Family and many other events. Our photo albums are decorated inside and out so all you need to do is paste your photos in the designated spots on the lovely layouts. We are located in OC California.

How did you come up with your business name?
Walking the dog one day, I was looking at the houses in this high-end neighborhood and I noticed there were no lights shining through the windows, no kids playing outside, no sign of life. I suddenly thought that we invest so much time trying to get more, buy more, get bigger and better, we actually don’t have the time to enjoy the ‘more’ we have. These houses were big beautiful empty boxes. I realized what makes my life ‘more’ in every way are the people in it, and how we share time and memories together. I decided to keep my box filled with treasures, enjoying moments with my family and friends and treasuring them in beautiful albums, so we can enjoy every moment more than once.

When and why did you decide to start your own business?
I had a full time job teaching and organizing events for the school, I sold my scrapbook albums on the net, volunteered, invested in human capital – my two kids, a dog and a traveling husband. I tried to invent a time machine that will accommodate my schedule better…. I’m still looking for one. Two years after my daughter, Gaby, was born I decided my best investment was my family and so I launched My Treasure Box, a way to treasure what’s in the box and do what I love – Scrapbooking!

How did you get started?
The time machine project fell through.

What motivates you to keep your business going?
People. Clients. My family.

Do you have a particular product that's a best seller on your site?
Our best sellers are the baby books of all sizes and colors. People just love them! Each month we have a different promotion, sign in for the newsletter to be notified.

How do you advertise your business? Which methods proved successful/effective?
I advertise through findgift.com; Christmasgift.com; adwords by Google, social links on the net and word of mouth.

How do you juggle family and work at home?
I have split days. I work on orders, phone calls and my site during school hours, then have kids-time, play dates, social calls, friends and other home-maintenance activities until it’s bed time. I return to work for a few hours at night. Weekends tend to be family and friends time.

What advice would you give to moms seeking to become a WAHM?
Research the market before, take one step at a time during and have your plan laid out for the future. Most of all – be flexible!

Are you a Mom in business? Then you already know my secret of success.

What is it?

Everything you need to know about succeeding in business you learned from giving birth. No, really! See what I mean.

Principle #1) It’s going to be more work than you think.

I know you read about people who have an idea that "accidentally" makes them a million, much like your neighbor's cousin twice removed who had a 2 hour painless labor.

Don't count on it!

Your business is probably going to be more work than you thought at first. You will need to constantly work at marketing yourself, and you'll have to discipline yourself to do those things even when you don't feel like it. And there's a reason they call it "labor" too.

2) It’s going to take longer than you think.

Yes that's right. It's unlikely you'll be an overnight success. It will likely take you a couple of years as well as reinvesting in your knowledge and in your business before you realize your income goals. But that's ok because...

3) It’s a lot of work up front and the prize is at the end.

And the prize is so worth it, isn't it? In fact when you get there you may have so much fun that you immediately begin planning another!

4) You're going to look dumb sometimes.

That's right. Ever looked at your birth photos? What about the video? It's embarrassing isn't it! Yuck- did I really sound/look that awful?!

You're going to make mistakes in your business. Get over it! You have a job to do. You don't have to look and sound perfect all the time. (Just be sure to apologize afterwards, kind of like you did with your husband when he rubbed you the wrong way during labor and you yelled at him.)

5) Be sure to surround yourself with people who have done it before.

I'm not a proponent of unassisted childbirth and I don't believe in going it alone with your business either.

Find a mentor. Go upline, downline, online, but find a woman who is doing what it is you want to do and get her assistance. Subscribe to her ezine, find out if she does mentoring, study her techniques, etc.

5) Tell anyone who has something negative to say or a bad attitude to go away.

You don't need anyone with bad energy present at your birth. They'll slow you down and stop the communication you have with your own wisdom. Similarly, don't listen to people who discourage you with your business goals!

6) Just when you think you can't go on….the worst part is over.

Have you ever thought about giving up in your business? It just seems like too much work, you're tired and want to go home right now!? (Remember that feeling?) You're in an important transition.

If you hang in there a little longer, take it one contraction…er, day at a time, you'll get the prize, and it will be so much more than you ever dreamed!

How did you come up with your business name?
As part of my product line, I have a “Thank You” candy bar that has a layer of brown chocolate and a layer of pink chocolate, I described it as tickled with pink. When forming my foundation, Tickled Pink seemed like the perfect fit.

When and why did you decide to start your own business?
I started my first product line 14 months ago when I traveled to audition for Oprah’s Big Give at Harpo Studios. After my audition, I knew the reasons I had created the chocolate bar was to give a portion of the proceeds to women in business. Since then, I have created over 42 additional products and am now ready to launch nationwide! Furthermore, I invited women business owners to participate by producing products for the Tickled Pink line. I believe this foundation will fill a void that is not currently being met for women nationwide who are already in business.

How did you get started?
After supporting women in business with my own personal financing, I thought there had to be a better way. So, I started the 501c3 foundation that would allow other business to help in my mission by donating or purchasing from the Pink product line.

What motivates you to keep your business going?
I like to think of myself as a self-motivator. My enthusiasm is a big part of what keeps me going; especially when it comes to developing new products. As one of seventeen children and marrying my childhood sweetheart at age 17, I learned about life at a young age and I strive to make the most out of every opportunity I am presented. I sold my much-loved red convertible to provide the initial funding for this Foundation. I know that with a dream, support and a lot of hard work, great success is possible.

Do you have a particular product that's a best seller on your site?
That is a tough question for me, as I have several different products. The clothing line is a big hit, because I offer it from infant sizes up to adult sizes. When you have a wide variety of sizes, your customer base grows tremendously.

My Pink-A-LICIOUS® candy bar is another big hit. I have not found another candy bar like it, made up entirely of pink chocolate. Everyone is looking for that new product to catch their eye! Like the NEW “Tickled Pink” Chocolate Tool-Box!

How do you advertise your business? Which methods proved successful/effective?
Networking is where I focus most of my adverting, second to that would be through the internet. Advertising is not only about making a sale, but it’s also about making connections; I realize how many other women in business are out there looking for the same support.

Another method of advertising that I have found to be extremely successful is trade shows. Having recently traveled to New York City for a trade show, I can say that the contacts that I made have taken my business and products to the next level of success.

I am pretty involved in Gift Bags for Hollywood too; I just love what I do!

How do you juggle family and work at home?
I am fortunate that my children are grown; and my passion came to me later in life. When my four children were growing up I was a very busy full-time mom. It was at the same time that my youngest was graduating from high school that my drive to start my own business really kicked in and I have been on cloud nine since.

Although my children are grown, I do have to make my marriage a priority. I am blessed to have a wonderful and understanding husband who wants to see me succeed. There have been many late nights when he has been by my side helping me prepare orders or helping me come up with new ideas. It’s just another way we can be together!

What advice would you give to moms seeking to become a WAHM?
Go for your passion, you will know what it is when it hits you... trust me!

You don’t have to reinvent the wheel, take advice from someone who has been there and done that, it will save you a lot of time and money.

Trade Mark your ideas; this is very important as it will help to take your products to the next level. Finally I would encourage you to attend a women’s conference in business, and step out of the box and grow with powerful women in business:

When I consider everything good that’s happened in my life, it’s all been due to taking risks. When you look at your dreams, do they require you to sometimes be uncomfortable? To stretch outside of your safe zone – outside of your ‘bubble’? Absolutely!

Do you want to hear a confession?

The first few times Kelly McCausey asked me to be on WAHMTalkRadio.com, I made excuses! I tried to hide in my bubble….

“I have Boy Scouts that night.”
“I’m not feeling well.”

BAWK! BAWK! I was terrified to record with her. I admired her so much and didn’t want to make a fool out of myself.

After this happened a few times, I was getting embarrassed. My friend Annette Yen and I dared each other to do one thing we were scared to do. She promised to write an article and I agreed to go on Kelly’s show. We shoved each other out of our bubbles. Now, Annette is an article-writing machine – and Kelly can’t get rid of me!

Consider one of the biggest risks in life – parenthood. If we had been too scared to take the chance to become Moms, think of everything we’d be missing.

Yes, it caused considerable agony at times.

Being naked in a room of doctors? NOT fun.
Dealing with a screaming baby in an airplane? Absolutely awkward.
Driving your 4 year old to the emergency room with a broken leg? Downright terrifying.

The rewards of parenthood? Priceless. Thank God for risks and rewards.

Your business is the same way. Yes, it’s hard to reach out and to take risks, but that’s where the payoff is.

Think about it.

I hope that this year brings you rewards and joy beyond anything you can imagine. Dream big and set your goals high.

Who is Alex Casey Baby? Where are you located?
Alex Casey Baby is an e-boutique that sells high-end, unique baby gifts. We recently branched out to include sibling gifts as well, since there was a particular demand for them. I am located in Chestnut hill, Ma., and often open up my showroom to local customers, but as an online retailer, I’m anywhere you want me to be!

How did you come up with your business name?
My oldest daughter is named Alexandra Casey. Shout-out to Sabrina Dylan who was after the inception of Alex Casey Baby!

When and why did you decide to start your own business?
It was shortly after my first daughter was born about 2 years ago. I went back to my desk-job selling semiconductors when my 3-months of maternity leave were over. From the get-go I had decided that when it didn’t make me happy anymore I wouldn’t do it and that didn’t take long. After an unfortunate re-organization at work, I was determined to get out and into my own home-based business.

How did you get started?
An idea, a few bucks, a great web-designer and an encouraging husband. I ran with it.

What motivates you to keep your business going?
The amazing feedback I get from customers. Shopping for baby stuff makes people smile and it’s my pleasure to help them to just that.

Do you have a particular product that's a best seller, and that you're promoting on your site?
The personalized towels are an ACB exclusive. I felt there was an untapped need for full-sized fabulous towels that would last for many years so I designed the ones you see on the site. They are hand-made by a sew-er and each is unique, soft and makes a perfect gift. Not the most expensive item I sell, but definitely my favorite. I also love the tutus, seems everyone does!

How do you advertise your business? Which methods proved successful/effective?
I participate in tons of bloggy giveaways, online reviews and a little advertising. I think mom-bloggers are the perfect source of word-of-mouth advertising. I also bring my stuff for in-home parties and shopping events.

How do you juggle family and work at home?
With lots of help! I have seriously strange hours. I’ve been known to send an email before the sun rises and after what should be bedtime.

What advice would you give to moms seeking to become a WAHM?
First of all, you can’t expect to run a business (effectively) and take care of children simultaneously. Get help. And if you think you worked hard for someone else, wait till you’re your own boss!

Stress Reeks Havoc
Even low levels of stress can exacerbate or possibly cause these physical illnesses: Heart Disease, Stroke, Susceptibility to Infections, Gastrointestinal Problems, Diabetes, Muscular and Joint Pain, Headaches and Migraines as well as these psychological conditions: Memory and Concentration Difficulties, Sleep Disturbances and Depression.

And, yes, some days I feel like I’m suffering from all of those! That’s when my body is trying to tell me, “Nicole – you’re way out of balance!”

So, if you’re just not feeling as well as you should, then really reassess your stress levels and visualize what that stress is doing to your health.

Spending Time on Yourself is NOT Selfish. Working Yourself Sick Is.

I know, I know. You’ve heard it 100 times before and you’ll hear it another 100 times. You know why? Because it’s true. You need to have balance in your life. And, believe me, I battle this on this a daily basis, so I know it’s hard to find balance when you are driven to succeed at being a WAHM. But, even when your ‘to do’ list seems insurmountable, you still need to take care of your health (both physical and emotional).

But, you know what? You can do it. Start by choosing a hobby. Scrapbooking, guitar playing, belly dancing, reading, pampering, wood working, gardening, poker. Just find something outside your work that makes you happy.

Yadda yadda. I can hear you brushing me off. Hang on a second and keep reading….

Think of the example you are setting for your children. If you have little interests outside of being a WAHM and are feeling stressed and unhappy, your children will follow in your footsteps.

Strive to treat yourself as you’d hope your children would treat themselves. You’re teaching them every day how to grow up to be happy adults, but the words will mean nothing if the example isn’t there. Try to have a night out with your sweetie or with some girlfriends every few weeks. They deserve a happy Mommy.

Meds: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

Doctor-prescribed medication and self-medication are two methods of stress management.

Neither of these options is good or bad. Just like everything in life – take it in moderation. If you enjoy an glass of wine after a long stressful day, then enjoy it guilt free. (cheers!)

If your doctor prescribes a medication that you need to get through a difficult time, then by all means you do what is best for you.

Or, if you enjoy herbal remedies, teas and aromatherapy for relaxation, then go for it!

However, one of the common effects of stress is over-medicating or self-medicating. So, if you find yourself relying heavily on alcohol or medication (either doctor prescribed or self-prescribed) or you begin taking illegal drugs, then talk to your doctor about it as soon as possible. You deserve to enjoy your life – not miss out on it.

Sometimes we have to be Sneaky

Sometimes the best thing for your business is to get away from it for a bit. Seriously, I have my best inspiration when I’m NOT at my computer – which is a little scary since my businesses are online.

Treat yourself to 15 minutes to yourself – even if you have to tell your husband you’re having ‘bathroom issues’ in order to get undisturbed time. (shhhh… I’ve done this.) I wonder how surprised my husband would be to find me sitting on the floor of the bathroom wrapped in a blanket, reading a book? I know, it’s too much information, but I’m trying to show just how important it is to have that time to yourself. I’m not promoting deception in marriage, but if you have to stretch your time in the bathroom, don’t feel guilty about enjoying the freedom.

So, make an effort today to start stealing moments of happiness. Life is not a dress rehearsal, enjoy every second that you can!

How did you come up with your business name?
I wanted to design the cutest creations for my little cutie and others as well...hence, Creations 4 Cuties!
When and why did you decide to start your own business?
My third and last child and only girl was born 3 months early...granted I spent A LOT of time in the NICU awaiting the day for her to come home WITH us... I began dreaming of a way to make money and stay home with my miracle baby.

How did you get started?
I started making little hair bows and loved it so much I thought I would try consigning in a few stores where I live. With much success I thought it would be fun to have an online store ... and 2 online stores later and wholesaling to almost a dozen others here I am! Kind of like my preemie story... what started out so tiny has grown into such a fun and beautiful gift!
What motivates you to keep your business going?
Pure passion and creativity... and my 2 boys and little girl. Designs come to me even in my sleep..literally! I have a notebook by my bed and when (a) really cute idea (wakes me up) I have to write it down!

Do you have a particular product that's unique and/or a best seller on your site?
All of my designs are unique and i try to make my creations with a whole lot of my passion and love! My designs have been a huge hit for flower girl dresses and my teeny wings and tiny tutus are such a darling ensemble for those first sweet portraits.
How do you advertise your business? Which methods proved successful/effective?
I am so new that it is all word of mouth and I try to sell at several boutiques and shows to get my name out there!

How do you juggle family and work at home?
I am pretty lucky... my husband gets off work in the afternoon so he takes over and I disappear into my in-home studio for a couple hours.

What advice would you give to moms seeking to become a WAHM?
Anything is possible... if you keep your mind to it... you can do it!

You have a very nice growing list of subscribers to your newsletter. Sometimes it's hard to find new ideas to add or if you're new at this, what type of content you want. If you display your newsletter for visitors to read, then your goal is keep them interested and eventually become subscribers and of course, you want to keep your subscribers subscribed.

Here are seven ideas for newsletter content.

1. Newsletters are great for informing and keeping your subscribers/readers up-to-date on current happenings or coming events. Make announcements about online workshops, web conferencing or new project ideas. For something extra, you may want to publish special holiday editions during the holiday season.

2. Ask the expert, a question and answer or poll section. This is a great way to generate feedback, encourage participation and readers' interest.

3. Product or e-book reviews. This is a benefit for you. By doing product or e-book reviews, it's a great way to increase sales. You know the saying; people will buy from people they know and trust. Offering something of value is always a win-win situation and of course you want the best for your subscribers.

4. Offer a freebie. Who doesn't like freebies? It could be anything really. If they subscribe to your newsletter, you can give them a sneak preview by allowing them to download a chapter or two of your e-book. If they are interested, they can purchase the e-book at a discounted price. The sky's the limit when it comes to freebies.

5. Profile subscribers. This is a nice way of getting to know your subscribers and to show them your appreciation. Don't you think they may have something to offer and share with the group that would be beneficial?

6. Helpful tips. You don't need to have a full-fledged article for it to be considered informative and resourceful. Simple, easy to remember tips can go a long way.

7. Mix it up and offer a joke of the day, smile of the week, inspirational quotes or even a brain teaser. All work and no fun can become a stressful day. A quick pick-me-up can do the trick for early starters and late workers who need just a bit more energy before they call it a day.

Your newsletter doesn't have to be long, but it needs to have useful content so you will get more subscribers and keep your current ones excited for your next update.

How did you come up with your business name?
I have always loved Preppy Fashion and when I had my 2 daughters, Lindsey and Jamie, I decided to name my company for them; my 2 preppy girls!

When and why did you decide to start your own business?
I am kind of addicted to searching the internet for preppy items for my daughters. I found that I was falling in love with so many items and buying a lot!! Then, when I e-mailed one of the vendors to tell her how much I looooved her products, she casually said that I should start selling out of my home. Then my husband said he would build a little website for me, and when he wasn’t looking, I added all sorts of products and vendors to my site and it just kind of blossomed from there! I have SO much fun finding fun, cute products and adding them to my website for other stylish mommies!

How did you get started?
WOW… It all happened so fast! I ordered some Christmas gifts that I really loved and then by January we had a website and started selling! It really kind of exploded!! It’s been really fun, that’s for sure!

What motivates you to keep your business going?
All the super cute things that I find! If I love it myself, then it goes on the site! Also, I get lots of great e-mails from other women who love my website and that just makes me so happy! Something that I created out of thin air; perfect strangers love it!

Do you have a particular product that's a best seller on your site?
As I write this, it’s graduation time across the country and I have to say that my Black and White Damask Monogrammed Laptop Cases have been a huge hit! Also, the Coffee Travel Mugs and Spa Slippers were a hit at Mother’s Day. Now people are buying the very inexpensive Monogrammed Checkbooks for their Teacher Appreciation gifts.

How do you advertise your business? Which methods proved successful/effective?
I have done a little bit of advertising in various Mom’s Club newsletters. I have also participated in some vendor shows. Mostly, people find me on the internet or attend a home party. It’s funny, I haven’t had the budget for any real advertisements but we are still doing really well!

How do you juggle family and work at home?
Ummm, it’s been hard!! When I started in January, Jamie was only 4 months old! And Lindsey was a very needy 2 year old! I worked mostly at night with my husband or during naptime… who am I kidding, I took naps as often as possible!! But my husband has been a huge part of the success because he really loves playing around with the website and working on different gadgets to make it better.

What advice would you give to moms seeking to become a WAHM?
BE ORGANIZED!!!

I'm always amazed at how much my son teaches me about life — that is, when I take the time to remark that what he's doing can teach me something valuable... I watched him play on our porch one sunny day, and asked myself, "What can I learn about myself and the way I run my business?" Here are a few lessons I've learned:

Growth & Learning:

growth is gradual—you don’t grow up in one day, one week, one month, or even in one year

learn new skills by watching the big kids

be curious; explore everything

just take one step at a time

never refuse help if it’s offered

don’t worry about getting your hands dirty

Success:

take risks

if at first you don’t succeed, try, try again

don’t be afraid to play with the big kids

Social Life, Relationships:

have those 1 or 2 people that will comfort you when you fall

have your “cheering squad” who will celebrate your small accomplishments

say ‘hi’ or smile to everyone you meet

Creativity, Self:

find creative ways to get around obstacles

say “no”

see how high/far you can reach/climb

if you don’t like something the first time you try it, try it at least 2 more times before deciding you don’t like it

have fun

be in the moment

This is a reminder to take each opportunity you have to notice the simpler aspects of your surroundings, to learn something new about yourself, and to lean back and take a breath every once in a while. The success of your business could depend on it.

Meet the Mom Behind - Light Affection!

Who is Light Affection? Where are you located?
You would think that would be the easiest question to answer or at least after 5 years of doing this, it would be easier! Basically, Light Affection is our high-tech version” of an old art form called Lithophanes. We create carvings from photographs submitted by our customers and turn them into lamps and night lights. So this is not merely inserting our customer’s picture in front of a light. When the custom carved piece is lit from behind, the image magically appears. The carved piece is made out of a sepia-toned material that should last for 1,000 years (haven't tested it myself but so says the manufacturer) so besides being really unique, it is definitely something that will last for generations.

We are located in Los Alamitos , California . We do not have a storefront (our business is Internet-based), and has become a popular gift, mostly from “word-of-mouth” customer referrals to friends and family.

How did you come up with your business name?
It was quite a process. I think a good name is an important marketing tool. Since I knew I was in it for the long haul I didn't start anything until I had the name. I had a notebook I carried around and just made lists of names that popped into my head. I kept checking the lists to make sure the domain name was available. I kept writing down names, looking at them, and then erasing the ones that I didn't like anymore. After about a week and narrowing it down to around 10 names, I started asking my friends and family what names they liked and what they associated each name with. I ended up with “Light Affection,” which was a little too long of a name than what I expected but now, I can't really imagine a different name.

When and why did you decide to start your own business? How did you come up with such a unique product?
In my mind I always knew I wanted my own business but once I got into the circle of working for someone else and the family was depending on my salary, it was hard to break out. After having my second baby boy things just fell into place. Work wasn't interesting anymore and at the same time, my husband’s work was quite steady. We agreed that as hard as it may be, this is my time. I could stay at home, spend more time with my boys, and start my own business. We knew it was risky but my husband was my greatest supporter and we just went for it.

As for the product, professionally, I’m a mechanical engineer and my line of work introduced me to the concept. The tricky part was to come up with an actual product and prototype. That took a while but eventually I had something I felt was an actual product that I would love to have myself and be proud to sell. Still, it’s an on-going process. There are more designs I would like to introduce and for the existing ones, improvements I’d like to make.

How did you get started?
There were several things involved. On the marketing end I knew I wanted to sell online, so building a website was a must. Since my budget was non-existent, I decided to do it myself. I didn't know much about it so I asked around, read books, and learned the software. My website went through quite a few transformations but eventually settled into the current look. Since I also had to actually produce a product, I had to buy the machinery, find a place for it, and find space for my "assembly line". The assembly line took over half of my "office" space and the machine went into the entry closet (where you are supposed to hang your coats). At the time, I had a friend that experienced a lifestyle change. She used to joke that she just got out of the closet and I go into the closet everyday.

What motivates you to keep your business going?
I think what motivates me most, as corny as it sounds, are my customers’ responses. It is just so gratifying to get their emails and calls, and I appreciate every single one of them. I also ended up needing some help as the business grew and decided to take a risk by having my girlfriends work with me. I say “risk” because I was worried about losing their friendship in the process; what happened is that we have the best working atmosphere I can ask for. I love to come to work every morning. It is almost like meeting your girlfriends for coffee instead of going to work.

Do you have a particular lamp or night light that's a best-seller on your site?
Well, to be honest, we really have one product that is available in different sizes and frame colors. I would say our top sellers are the Night Lights and 4x4 lamps.

How do you advertise your business? Which methods proved successful/effective?
The majority of my sales are online sales and of those, I would say the 80% come to us by “word of mouth” and repeat customers (or their husband, daughter, aunt, etc.). Other than that, I try to network with other websites and constantly work on updating my website to improve search engine popularity.

How do you juggle family and work at home?
I think the main thing for me is the flexibility it's offered. If I need to volunteer in school, I can still do it. If I need to take the day off and take my kid to the doctor, I can. I try not to work while I am on "home time". The challenge for me is to shut off my brain from "work thoughts". It is definitely a “work-in-progress”.

What advice would you give to moms seeking to become a WAHM?
The one piece of general advice I would give is: Go for it! Trust yourself and your abilities and if it is something you love and feel passionate about, you are off to a good start!

What are the signs that you're on the right track and on the way to, or actually already living your life with true purpose, real meaning and passion, and fulfilling your true potential? You'll know when –

1. You're totally obsessed with what you're doing – time just flies by and you're on a 'high' when you're doing your 'thing' you love. To you it's not 'work' at all because you're enjoying every moment and spending your time doing exactly what excites and makes you happy. It's what gets you 'springing' out of bed in the morning, and when you're away from it, you can't wait to get back to it …

2. You're totally hyper focused and in a trance-like state when you're doing what you love. You feel like you've been transported elsewhere, and your immunity to distraction is on 'high'. Often you may not hear people around you speaking to you, and only realize when you find yourself being roused and brought back to the sound of the words "Are you listening to me? Hey, did you hear what I just said?"...

3. You've got a strong underlying Belief, all the while, that this IS definitely what you're meant to do …

4. You keep a strong clear Vision afloat all the time of where you want to get to - even when you're dog tired and exhausted, events and circumstances aren't flowing, things seem to not be going your way, and people are against you ...

5. You just keep going when the going gets tough, and keep getting up and on with it …

6. You surprise even yourself at your unfailing persistence to keep going and you feel propelled by this inner life force that is driving you ...

7. Despite the hurdles, trials, tribulations and frustrations, you look back with a smile and know that you've really enjoyed the experience anyway. You know deep down inside that you're going somewhere worthwhile and what you're doing has meaning and purpose ...

8. Things just seem to fall into place easily and just happen 'serendipitously' - people appear, telephone calls come, offers of support and guidance present, new relevant resources are introduced to you. You stop for a moment and you're in the right mindset to see the flow of what's happening and you smile and muse with sincere pleasing satisfaction …

9. You see that what you do makes a real difference in the lives of others beyond what you imagined. You give real value. Their feedback says it all and you're constantly amazed with great humility …

10. Sometimes you have a clear vision of what you want, but the pathway there isn't always clear. As chapters unfold and phases roll out and define themselves, ones you didn't even expect, you stay open to guidance …

This one is a bit tougher –

11. You trust and you're never disappointed with the outcomes and where you find yourself going. Even if your passion or purpose is a bit off the acceptable 'mainstream' track and you're not sure exactly where you'll end up, you go for it anyway with perseverance and patience. Even if you don't know exactly where your hunches and intuitions are leading. You're fascinated by the journey and your faith seems to balance out the odds even when it seems you're going against all the odds.

I came across this great quote three times recently (3 times - aha! – that’s a sign!) –
"If you follow your bliss you put yourself on a kind of track that has been there all the while, waiting for you, and the life that you ought to be living is the one you are living. When you can see that, you begin to meet people who are in your field of bliss, and they open doors to you. I say, follow your bliss and don't be afraid, and doors will open where you didn't know they were going to be." (Joseph Campbell)

Doesn't it make sense that if you LOVE what you're doing, you'll do it more often, more easily, and keep getting better at it? When you do so, the value you give to others will grow amazingly and exponentially.

In a business context, your perceived value to your customers, clients or subscribers will increase naturally.

So the key is to start doing what you love now. Take action! Make yourself immune to distraction! Get on track and be committed …

Sure, it might not result in a successful or even million dollar business overnight, but over the course of time, it's entirely possible, and it's happening all the time. If others can do it, so can you!

There will be nothing more satisfying than turning your calling, purpose and passion into a rewarding and prosperous business or career venture that you love doing, every single day, and to live the life you were meant to live.

Who is Leelou and what sets you apart from other custom blog designers?
Leelou is a nickname that I've had since I was three. My real name is Julie. I am a recovering blog-aholic. My husband teaches fifth grade and I get to stay home and play with our two kiddos. Last year, it seemed like the only cure for colic was a good stiff blog. Now I can't control myself.

Leelou Blogs (www.LeelouBlogs.blogspot.com) is all about making free, fun, original backgrounds from "scratch" -- nothing pre-designed.

Leelou Custom Blog Design (www.LeelouHeaders.blogspot.com) is the whole package. Custom headers, backgrounds, link buttons, layouts, and whatever else your little blog desires (on a Wal-Mart budget).

Where are you located?
I work at home in Southern Oregon.

How did you come up with your business name?
When I was three years old my best friend couldn't say my name, Julie. It always came out sounding like "Leelou". And it has stuck with me ever since.

When and why did you decide to start your own business?
I got into blogging a couple years back and I was sick of seeing the "cookie cutter" blog templates that were available at the time. I wanted my blog to more "me," more Leelou (if that makes any sense). Initially I started making original backgrounds for my friends and me. The more I made the more I learned. I started figuring out more about the software I use and the actual coding (HTML) of the blog it self. I was making backgrounds and headers most days for friends, friends of friends, and their friends too! At the beginning of this year I realized that the demand was high, and it was time that I started making it worth my time.

How did you get started?
In January I started Leelou Blogs, a blog where I post all of my free original backgrounds. I make them all from "scratch" -- nothing is pre-made; just me, my mouse, and my trusty design software. More and more people started using my blog backgrounds and were requesting background and header designs for their personal or business blogs. I was way into the whole pro bono part of it all. Heck, who doesn't love free stuff? But I had no idea there was such a demand for custom blog design. It was then that I decided to join the ranks of WAHM's and see if I couldn't provide a little extra "bacon" myself.

What motivates you to keep your business going?
Besides being OCB (Obsessive Compulsive Blogger), I am truly impressed with the number of full-time moms that work from home. I had no idea there were so many. A lot of my motivation comes from supportive moms like you that leave me encouraging comments and emails. The other part comes from knowing what it is like living on a tight budget. I want to make blogging exciting for everyone without breaking the bank. Every blogger deserves a little pizazz.

Do you have a particular blog template that's popular and/or that you're promoting on your site?
Most bloggers order my "Bells and Whistles" package. This includes a custom header, a one-of-a-kind background, custom sidebar categories, a picture link button, custom signature, and your choice of two or three columns.

To spice things up every now and then, I like to run some crazy contest. The last contest featured my Wedding/Engagement blog. One lucky couple will be receiving a deluxe custom engagement blog (its like an interactive wedding invitation).

How do you advertise your business? Which methods proved successful/effective?
Most of my business comes from word of blog/mouth. Many people have placed my link button on their blog after using a free background or purchasing a blog package. This has been amazingly helpful. In addition, a few other blogs have featured my work, giving me some great traffic.

How do you juggle family and work at home?
Typically my work involves a lot of late nights in front of the computer. It is usually the only uninterrupted time I have (even nap times are difficult). Fortunately my husband is home for the summer and I am able to blog it up during the day while he takes over as a SAHD.

What advice would you give to moms seeking to become a WAHM?
Know your product and know who "needs" it. Put your product or idea out there for people to see. Everyone loves "free samples" -- and many times it turns into free advertising.

Work at Home Moms Housecleaning Tips

If you're a work from home Mom you have a lot to juggle. The housework still has to be done despite clients, kids, deadlines and phone calls. If you're wondering how you'll be able to do it all, hopefully these "Work from home Moms house cleaning tips" will help.

Be reasonable and lower your expectations when it comes to housework.

Remember...you ARE a working Mom. You get to do that work from home, but you're also doing it with small kids underfoot. You deserve a pat on the back, not a guilt trip.

Decide what's important to you and your family and focus on those tasks.

For instance...in my house, the kitchen always gets cleaned quickly after it's dirtied. My "ick factor" is a grimy sink. Plus, we're in that room more than any other. Bathrooms and kitchens are more important than other rooms because of the hygiene factor. A little dust or kid toys underfoot? Ah, who cares? Plus, as my sister, a mom of 4 always says, stepping on Legos is free acupressure.

My husband on the other hand, is into floors. The whole house could be a pig sty, but if the floors are clean, the house is clean to him. So I make it a point to vacuum before he gets home.

What makes your house clean? Make sure those tasks are done, which for most people means having a simple routine that you do without thinking. As for the rest...

Delegate, outsource, or procrastinate.

Decide what you can delegate to hubby, your kids or to a teenager eager to earn a few dollars. I think the best way you can spend $20 on your home based business is to pay a mommy's helper to come over for several hours and clean or play with your kids while you do business. Make sure you have a long to do list at the ready so you don't squander your time checking email or reading blogs. (Who, me?)

Your kids can be paid surprisingly small amounts of money to do cleaning that is above and beyond their regular chores. Don't feel guilty about doing this. I know one 6 year old who is one Jabba the Hutt Lego set richer because of all the dimes and quarters he earned vacuuming. Ahem.

Procrastinate the tasks that take the same amount of time to do whether they're done daily or weekly. Dishes, for one, take longer to do the longer they sit. Vacuuming and dusting take the same amount of time whether they're done daily or weekly.

And outsourcing...as soon as you can afford to, pay someone to do things around the house while you focus on more important tasks. And if you can't do that, invite someone over for a playdate. It's amazing how much energy you can drum up when company's coming, and how fast you can clean too!

Teach your children to clean up after themselves.

This isn't being a strict parent. It's doing your future daughters-in-law a favor. Even a 2 year old child can be gently trained to put dirty clothes in the hamper. It helps when you keep one in their room. Make it into a routine, make up a song about it, do what you need to do.

A child as young as 3 can be taught to pick up toys (sometimes they need a little supervision to keep on track), bring dirty dishes to the sink, wipe up spills, etc.

A 5 or 6 year old can be taught how to dust, clean glass surfaces, sweep under the table, and even vacuum.

Use the if/then technique.
"Oh you want some yogurt? When you pick up those books you may have some."

And as for hubby? Well, my personal standard is...if it doesn't make it to the hamper, it doesn't get washed. Your mileage may vary.

Use shortcuts.

If it's a nice day, have the kids eat lunch or snacks outside. No table, chairs, and floor to clean.

Reserve cleaning bathrooms for when your toddler is in the tub. You have to be in there anyway. Be sure to use a totally non toxic cleaner.

The best time to clean your shower or tub is right after you've used it...the hot steamy water loosens all the grime.

Open your mail over the trash can. Immediately dump all junk.

And here's one word of caution. Don't fall into the trap of running around like a crazy women during naptime or after bed doing all the cleaning. You need this time to pamper yourself a bit (if you're fortunate enough to have kids who still take naps!) and have some quiet time alone or with hubby.

Being a work from home Mom is full of challenges, but with some creativity and flexibility, you can have a thriving business and a tidy home.

Who and what is Divapreneur™? Where are you located?
We are a virtual community full of resources, experts and support for any female entrepreneur who is growing her business online.

How did you come up with your site's name?
Actually, Kimberly Flynn, from Chroniquecouture.com came up the name. We wanted it to encompass every woman, without discriminating against age, race or any defining life event, like being a mom. Divapreneur™ is paradigm to any woman who is confident and pursues her passion, but also has time to cultivate her relationships with friends and freely give advice to others without fear of competition. We are a rare breed of women and finally there is a place for all of us.

When and why did you decide to start your site/ online network community of women?
Around February or March of 2007, I spoke to two friends of mine, Kimberly Flynn and Paulette Kinney, regarding giving away a website to someone who needed it and perhaps creating a yearly "scholarship" to give a website away every year to a deserving recipient. Divapreneur was born out of our desire to give back to an online community. Divapreneur has become a supportive, caring place to grow businesses, make meaningful connections and find the right resources to help members succeed.

How did you get started?
By trade I am a graphic designer and have worked on and off in the field for the past 15 years. I love web design but most of all I love to draw. My business was called HIP N CHIC DESIGNS when I started. I currently have 3 sites besides Divapreneur, Elainebiss.com, elainebissdesigns.com and houseofluxe.com, my own blog and personal mark in the world of design. As cliche as it may be, the love for what I do. I love my work and to have others love it as much as I do it`s amazing. Divapreneur has become a very supportive place and hang out of any diva who is conquering the entrepreneurial world.

What do you think brings your members back to your site on a regular basis?
Interactivity and resources. To be able to ask a question and be answered by a professional for free makes us unique. Not to mention the cute graphics. ;)

How do you advertise your site? Which methods proved successful/effective?
Word of mouth is the most powerful method we use. Nothing beats it and above all, it`s free.

How do you juggle family and work at home?
Delegation of responsibilities among the members of my family, as well as counting on the support of my husband has truly become a blessing to me. Although I am sure I could do this own my own, it is easier with a support system. Many moms feel guilty asking for help or hiring help, because their own mothers seemed to handle it all when they were growing up, myself included. I no longer feel that way. As much as I love my mom, my mother did not manage 2 corporations, wrote articles on a weekly basis, took care of 5 kids, 3 dogs and a husband. Cooking by itself is a daunting task. My mother was and will always be the best role model I had of a woman who could handle responsibilities and create a warm home, yet conserve her femininity and create her own fashion statements. My mother was never frumpy! (She studied fashion design.) That I will always admire. Divapreneur has also become an extension of that system and I can count on the divas for support.

What advice would you give to moms seeking to become a WAHM?
Love what you do passionately, Find time for family and never be afraid of asking for help. There is always someone who wants to help you!

Meet the Mom Behind "The Mommy Card!"

Who is The Mommy Card? Where are you located?
My name is Amy Sanderson, and I am a stay at home mom of three beautiful children. Before having children I lived outside of Boston and was an accountant. The Mommy Card is located in New Hampshire.

How did you come up with your business name?
I was trying to find a domain name that would tell about the product I am selling. I found the domain name www.themommycard.com was still available and jumped on it. I think my domain name helps people have an idea about my product before they get to my store or at a minimum they know who my products are made for.

When and why did you decide to start your own business?
I have always wanted to start a business from home so I can have flexible hours which are perfect for spending time with my three children. Ever since I was a child I have had an interest in photography and now I also have a love for designing in PhotoShop so I have put the two together. I thought Mommy Cards were such a great idea for moms, and I wished I had had them 7 years ago when I had my first baby. I was really excited about introducing the concept to other new moms.

How did you get started?
I found a great place for moms to host an online store at www.merchantmoms.com. The people there were very supportive and helped me every time I had a question. Then I found a web template I loved and had it customized for my site. I designed some Mommy Cards and then started to get the word out about them. I have learned so much about starting an online business.

What motivates you to keep your business going?
I love my business and a love to design cards that will make my customers smile each time they see them. I also keep thinking of new uses for my Mommy Cards like for grandparents, students and pets. This fall I am also going to come up with some family holiday cards.

How do you advertise your business? Which methods proved successful/effective?
I am just starting to advertise my business and so far I am starting with Google Adwords. I also started a blog that is like a store directory - ww.momwebstores.com.

How do you juggle family and work at home?
That is the hard part. Starting a business takes so much time and effort and you don’t get to see the financial rewards for quite a while. I try to work on my site everyday and get a lot done after the kids go to bed. I would much rather be working on my website than doing laundry or dishes!

What advice would you give to moms seeking to become a WAHM?
Get excited about your site and find products that you really love and are passionate about but also realize that it is going to take a while and a lot of work to be successful. Remember – Rome was not built in a day (and they did not have to prove themselves to Google)!

Working Around Your Children - Tips For The Home Based Professional

What Shall We Do About the Children?

If you're a work at home Mom, figuring out how to get any work done with young children around is probably your greatest challenge.

You don't want to ignore them...after all, you're at home with your kids so you can spend time with them, not have them stare at your back all day while you work on the computer.

I hope to help you with some strategies that have worked for me and other work at home Moms.

Outsource It

I hire mother's helpers as much as possible. A mother's helper is a young teen who is not old enough to leave kids alone with, but who can play with your child for a couple of hours while you work in another room. They usually work for less money than regular babysitters, and sometimes will even barter for services (rides to the mall, using your Internet, etc). Your kids will love the change of pace too!

Plan Ahead

Always, always know "What's next" for your business so you have a definite goal to tackle when you do sit down to the computer. For me, that means keeping a notebook within reach at all times so that when I get a moment, I can accomplish a task and tick it off my to-do list.

There's nothing worse than sitting down at the computer when you do have a block of free time and blanking out, or worse, spending time browsing forums and blogs (Who, me?!).

Don't Be "Half Busy" All Day

I recently read of a study that showed how children react when they are with an adult who, although available, was "half busy" withother tasks all day. The children being researched put many more demands for
attention on the adult, even if the adult was interruptible.

It's far better to give the kids undivided attention for a time, then switch to a task you want to accomplish, and expect them to respect that worktime.

Just be sure to keep it brief, and use your to-do list so that something worthwhile gets accomplished. You can slowly train your children to (gasp!) entertain themselves for short periods, consistently increasing the time
as they grow older. By doing so you're actually giving them a gift of self reliance and initiative.

Use a timer

Telling your 3 year old "Just let me finish writing this article and I will play with you in 20 minutes" is meaningless, and invites whining and other attention seeking behaviors. Set your kitchen timer so she can see the minutes ticking off. This works even for children too young to tell time.

Have a Happy Box

This trick involves keeping a box of toys that your child doesn't have access to at any other time, and bringing it out when you really need to have some time to concentrate. The box doesn't have to be anything glamourous, in fact, the more basic, the better. Go to the dollar store and spend ten bucks or so on stickers, funky pens, fun paper or whatever cheap, quiet things appropriate for your child's age. (It's not fun to have to spend an hour removing the evidence of a happy 2 year old with glitter glue stick off the couch!)

Use Technology

I use a laptop with wi-fi so that I can sit on the front porch and work while my kids play outside. They don't really need my attention then, just some "third eye" supervision.

If you make a lot of phone calls for your business, consider a headset telephone. These are great if you have quiet lap babies who need your presence but not a lot of conversation.

Avoid Using TV as Electronic Babysitter

It can be super tempting to turn on the TV so you can get some work done, but avoid the temptation. It's easy to let hours slip by because the kids are so hypnotized and quiet with the tube on. And, after it's turned off, they get hyper and start picking fights with one another and generally acting up. Get yourself a good book that lists easy kid craft ideas. Kids who don't watch much TV are good at entertaining themselves. I find that I can sometimes sneak off to the computer for a few minutes to nurse my newborn while the others are playing. Again, maximize that time by always checking your list first... and your email last!

Creative Scheduling

A lot of wahms suggest getting work done during naps and after bedtime, but what if your kids don't nap or you're (like me!) ready for bed shortly after they are?

Forget what other wahms say about how they schedule their day, and do what works for your family!

Some Moms wouldn't dare to work on the weekends, but if you can get something done while your husband or Grandma plays with the kids, go for it! If it's better for your sanity to nap with your baby instead of working, do that. If you're a morning person, get up an hour before everyone and get to work. This was an important strategy for me until my fourth baby was born, and then sleep become more important!

Every wahm and every family is different. Get creative and it will work out. One thing that works for me is to squeeze in some work time after dh gets home, after dinner. He rarely sees the kids in the morning, so he enjoys putting them to bed. During that time I work, then after they're in bed it's couple time.

Realize that your strategy will likely have to change depending on your kid's ages and stages. I hope these suggestions help you in your goal of having a happy family and thriving business.

I started this business in November 2007. I have always loved designing and it is a great way for me to be able to stay home and raise our daughter.

I designed our daughter's 2nd birthday invitations and got so many compliments and decided to design announcements and invitations for others. I created a video montage for our adoption journey and showed it to my family & friends at her 1st birthday party and everyone thought I should create them for others.

What motivates you to keep your business going?
Being able to stay home and raise our daughter is what motivates me to keep the business going. I truly enjoy designing cards and creating montages to help make memories last a lifetime for others.

Do you have a particular product that's unique?
All of my cards and video montages are unique and can be created for any occasion.

I network with other wahm's, do link exchanges, participate in having my products reviewed on blogs and websites. I put my logo on the back of my customer's cards so that whoever receive the card can look up my website.

How do you juggle family and work at home?
It is very important to me to put family first. I have always been a very hard worker. It takes a lot of organization, time management and determination to make it
work.

What advice would you give to moms seeking to become a WAHM?
Never give up on your dreams. It is a lot of work but if you love what you do it is so worth it to be home and see your children grow and develop.

How did you come up with your business name?
As unbelievable as it may be, the name did not start out as Burpie Baby. Originally, it was Dirty Baby but then I found that another company was already using that name and since I wanted to have my own unique presence, I decided to change it! I eventually decided on Burpie Baby and realized that it was actually a much more fitting name for our product, as it is all about the Burpie :)

When and why did you decide to start your own business?
(I started my business) approximately three years ago, but I have been a children's clothing designer for much, much longer! That is one of my "day" jobs :)

How did you get started?
Well I was making layette sets, as a gift for a relative, as I didn't usually make this type of item. The mess kit was just sort of naturally "born". I didnt even realize at the time, what I had actually done or the impact it may have for myself or other parents! After a few days, it finally dawned on me that I really had something Special. I decided to give something else as a gift, and kept the "prototype" of my newly discovered creation so I could mull it over more, but I was so very excited and passionate about the idea from the very start.

What motivates you to keep your business going?
Well actually, just the excitement I feel when I see what a great product this really is and how very helpful it can be to others by sharing it! I just love that this product can help make the little things just that much easier. As a parent, every little moment counts. It is very much like a fourth "baby" to me. I am that passionate about it. What mom doesn't like cute matching things for baby that are fashionable and fun, easy to use, help save time & organize all that baby stuff? Our baby mess kits do all of this, not to mention they are a reusable product made in the USA by moms, yeah!
Do you have a particular product that's unique, a best seller, and/or that you're promoting on your site?
Right now, the Original Burpie Baby Mess kit, which was the first set I came up with is the best seller. It is the three piece layette. Sock monkey print is very popular, so we have several different ones. All of the items include our exclusive convertible Burpie, and we also now have a two piece basic set and also a deluxe gift set that includes a coordinating onesie!

I have another great item I will be adding soon to the website and I am very interested in coming out with an organic line of baby "mess kits".

I use webrings, in-store boutique displays, banners, directory listings, blogs, product reviews, adwords and word of mouth. Adwords are very effective and I am excited about seeing the results of blogging, as I am just now getting into the blog scene!

How do you juggle family and work at home?
Oh my, well I love, love anything that saves me time! Although I am an avid "cook from scratch" kind of gal, there are those days where Schwann's teriyaki boneless wings sure come in handy -and they were even delivered to my door LOL. Did I mention that our baby mess kits can help parents save time? ha ha

What advice would you give to moms seeking to become a WAHM?
Do it! Stop just thinking about it, don't mull over all the many reasons why you can't start. Start small, something you know you can succeed with now.
Then later, as you build confidence, things that once seemed impossible become attainable.

Based out of Chandler, Arizona, we are a home business dedicated to making the world smell better one home at a time! We are an internet based company specializing in highly scented candles, wax tarts, bath products, shea butter and glycerin soaps, air fresheners, sachets and more! Scents can trigger memories, affect your mood, and create a sense of well being. That being said, our wax tarts (also known as wax melts, wax potpourri, and wax chips) are some of the strongest scents out there! After two years of testing and creating the perfect formula, we created tarts that will scent your entire home AND will last a minimum of 8 hours (although we find that many last MUCH longer!). We pride ourselves in our customer service and treat each customer as a friend. Every product is crafted by hand and is made to order.

How did you come up with your business name?
The Blue Gecko Candle Company came from two ideals. The blue part: In the ancient Chinese study of Feng Shui, it is said that the color blue promotes deep calm, serenity. It represents peace and trust, soothing, and calm. Burning a special fragrance, bathing in that certain extraordinary scent, or relaxing under the warm glow of a softly flickering flame, we can't imagine a better way to achieve serenity, calmness, peace. And as a mom, goodness knows we can all use a little peace!

And as for the "Gecko" in our name and logo? I’ve always loved the little guys. Hawaiian folklore designates this shy little lizard as a symbol of luck. A gecko in the home is thought to bring good luck to those who enter.

What better name than one that promotes serenity, peace and good fortune!

When and why did you decide to start your own business?
After having three children, and being blessed with the ability to stay at home, I knew that I eventually wanted to work from home. I wanted to be able to have the flexibility to help out in the kids’ classrooms, and volunteer with their many activities, to be there for them when they needed me.

I’ve always had an obsession with candles. In 2004, I discovered the world of wax tarts. I loved burning them, but was disappointed in their strength and how long they lasted. In 2005, I had an epiphany. I could make AND improve wax tarts! And so began my adventure. I started playing with different waxes, formulas, and additives. I began researching, and creating. By 2007 I had my formula down (AND my tarts were nice and strong and lasted!). That’s how it all began. I started making tarts by the dozens, candles, dabbled in bath products and air fresheners, and slowly things began snowballing. Friends and family were placing orders left and right, but everyone had one question, “Do you have a website I can order from?”.

How did you get started?
In September of 2007, I made the decision to open a website. I researched, researched, researched! I looked at my competition and knew what I did and didn’t want my image to be. After months of very hard work, I launched The Blue Gecko Candle Company. We opened our “doors” in October 2007 and haven’t looked back!

What motivates you to keep going?
My children motivate me to keep going. I want to instill in them the pride of ownership, good work ethics, and the belief that with determination, anything can be accomplished. That women can be successful business owners just as well as men is another lesson I hope to drive home. The fact that I truly LOVE what I’m doing is an added bonus. It’s easy to be motivated when you are truly excited about the products you are creating. My customers are another motivating factor. I cannot even express how wonderful it is when customers express how much they love our products. It’s very rewarding.

Do you have a particular product that you’re promoting on your site?
With summer in full swing it’s time to add a little summer fragrance to your living space! We are promoting our fabulous scented Summer Scentsations Tart grab bags! With scents like Pineapple Paradise, Rootbeer Float, and All American Apple Pie, to name a few…your mouth will be watering and your home smelling fantastic! We also have a floral version of the grab bag which includes such lovely fragrances as Honeysuckle, Lilac Blossoms and Butterfly Garden! Don’t have a tart warmer? No worries! We sell a variety of designer tart warmers as well.

How do you advertise your business? Which methods proved successful/effective?
Word of mouth has been the most successful form of advertising thus far. We’ve also provided samples for reviews, participated in promotional sample boxes, and paid for advertising spots on relevant websites.

How do you juggle family and work at home?
This has been one of my biggest challenges. Setting a schedule has helped, but with children at home, that schedule needs to be flexible. Because I’m working with extremely hot wax, I only pour products when the kids are sleeping. I try to get up early before the kids (ha!), and will stay up late working after they’ve gone to bed. I’ve set aside two days a week to be dedicated “work” days and will schedule play dates at friend’s houses for a for a few hours, have my husband take the kids out, or plan an activity that will keep them occupied.

What advice would you give moms seeking to become a WAHM?
Expect to succeed! If you’ve done your research, worked hard, and truly believe in yourself and your company, there is no reason why you can’t succeed! Set a schedule, network with other WAHMs, and most importantly…get out of the house once at least once a day ;)

As moms, we often have a hard time taking time out for ourselves (especially if we’re WAHMs!). Lighting a candle, running a bubble bath, and just taking 10 minutes out of our busy day to relax, can help us sit back and rejuvenate our spirits.

Meet the Mom Behind Free Birthday Treats!

Who is Free Birthday Treats and what is so unique about the service you provide?
I originally hale from Anchorage, Alaska and have now been a resident of Phoenix, Arizona since 1993. My career path has included a variety of industries from telecommunications to finance in a variety of positions such as a Customer Service Rep, an Executive Assistant and a Stockbroker.

After the birth of my two wonderful children: one in 1994 and another in 1998, I knew that it was time to focus on raising them and I began to look for alternatives to the corporate world. I've been an independent rep for Creative Memories, and then created my first business which was selling hand stamped note cards which developed into photography note cards using my own photographs.

In 2003, my son was diagnosed with Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis and I focused my efforts on caring for him and his needs. I am very proud to announce that five years later, he is in remission and is no longer on any medications. :)

In January of this year, I launched FreeBirthdayTreats.com which is a free and easy to use online resource to search for local free and discounted birthday treats for people of all ages, including pets. The site also provides other birthday related resources such as gift ideas, birthday services and birthday supplies.

Free Birthday Treats is unique because there is no registration required to browse through the local listings and businesses that offer a free or discounted birthday treat. Businesses receive a free basic listing. I do offer affordable advertising however for those that want to stand out from the growing list of treats.

How did you come up with your business/website name?
When I was still in the "idea" stage, I found a few free birthday websites so I knew what I couldn't use. I also used Google to find out how many sites came up when I searched for certain keywords related to my idea. I choose Free Birthday Treats because it only brings up approximately 294,000 websites...much better than millions of sites.

When and why did you decide to start Free Birthday Treats?
I had no immediate plans to start another business, but in 2007, I was sharing with friends what she did for her birthday and how I had saved money by using birthday coupons. They started asking where they could sign up so I offered to send them emails with the links to join. I really wanted to share these wonderful deals with more than just friends and families. I wanted something that would benefit millions across the nation. From there spawned FreeBirthdayTreats.com.

How did you get started?
I started a business and marketing plan to help keep me focused and determine next steps. The first step was getting the right domain name and reserving it. From there I created a website layout...what I wanted included in the website, how I wanted it laid out and what was needed to complete it. When I look back I have to laugh because I thought I could just use tables to list all the free birthday treats, but it wasn't long before I found out I needed a database. I purchased Expression Web and Access 2007 to create Free Birthday Treats. I was not familiar with either so I then purchased training DVD's and found a local web progammer on Craigslist to help me when I got in over my head. What motivates you to keep your business/website going?
My family and my passion to help others. Free Birthday Treats gives me the opportunity to not only help people save when celebrating birthdays, but also help businesses promote their loyalty programs...especially in today's economy when so many people and businesses are struggling to make it through. I feel I'm making a difference in people's lives and that's priceless to me.

Are you promoting anything specific on your site?
Free Birthday Treats for people of all ages, including pets.

How do you advertise your website?
I use several different methods to promote Free Birthday Treats: press releases, blog reviews, tv segments, newspaper articles, magazine articles, forums, and local networking meetings are most of them. I'm also looking into social media.

Which advertising methods proved successful/effective?
The blogs and tv station segment have really worked the best for me so far, but it really depends on if you're hitting the right target market. I find that it takes time to develop the right strategy.

How do you juggle family and work at home?
It isn't easy! LOL! Especially with summer now here. During the school year, I work while my kids are at school and generally try not to work until after they go to bed. I try not to work in the evenings too much though so I can spend time with my husband as well. Weekends are reserved for family unless I absolutely have something that needs to get done.

During the summer, I set up a schedule with the kids so they'll know what my schedule is and we can make plan around it. I've actually enlisted my daughter's help and she is now going through the training DVD's so she can work with me. :)

What advice would you give to moms seeking to become a WAHM?
This is said so often, but it's so true: what are you truly passionate about? Make a list and see if something pops out at you. What do you really enjoy? Find something that lights the passion within and build a business around it. It makes a world of difference doing something that you love and the money after and doing something you hate for the money.

Anything else you'd like to add about Free Birthday Treats or about being a WAHM in general?
Yes! Start a Success Journal...we can all think of things we might not have done just right in the last week, but what about the things we did right??? Start jotting down all the success - little and big. For instance, you got the kids up and to school on time, you have the outline of your business plan done, you got a load of laundry done and put away, you were featured on tv, etc! It builds our self-confidence to see these successes and helps keep us motivated!

So what is it about working from home?
Working from home, Entrepeneur, home-based business... You hear a lot of hype about working from home. It all sounds glamorous and easy to do. But it's much harder than one thinks.

There's a lot to consider :

1) Before I even speak in detail with someone, I ask them "WHY". Why do you want to work from home? This is very important for me to know. If you don't have a defined "why" you want to work at home, odds are you will not succeed in working at home. Your reason to work at home HAS to be stronger than your reason not to. There has to be drive, determination and persistence. Without it, you will not succeed.

2) Determine if you are looking to work from home full time or part time. Not all work at home opportunities are full time. So make sure that the company you are looking into can accommodate your desired hours of work.

3) When looking into companies that you are considering to work for, check the BBB (better business bureau) on each company. But here's the thing. You need to know what state that company is located in. And then you call the BBB in that state. I have heard a few people tell me that they called the BBB in the state that they live in, not the state that the company is located in. And they were given incorrect information. The BBB has the ability to make or break a company.

Key items to check on when contacting the BBB:

A) How long has the company been in business?
B) Has the company previously been under a different name? If yes, I suggest staying away. There's a reason.
C) Has the company filed bankruptcy before?
D) Has the company growth continuously grown positive?
E) Has the company moved around?
F) Has the company had the same phone number and for how long?

*** Understand this... It is impossible for a company to make every person happy. And if a company should have some negative feedback, how can you say that it's the fault of the company? What if someone worked for "company A" but did not have the drive, determination, skills, ability, time... What if life just got in the way and that person gave up on the company. Now this person is going to leave negative feedback on "company A", when it was not the companies fault. ***

4) Depending on the business that you are working, you will want to make sure that you have the main necessities. Computer, printer, fax, (there is a online fax service available), copier, highlighters (great for color coding procedures), business cards, paper, notebooks, daily planner, monthly whiteboard with erasable markers, promotional items, and the list goes on and on.

5) Create a work schedule and stick with it. Designate the time you want to work your business and write it down. Let everyone know that this is when you will be working and treat it as that, (work). Now believe me, I know this can be difficult. Especially if you are a single parent and you have younger children. You may only be able to work 20 minutes here, 15 minutes there..... But it will become routine. And I believe in letting my kids help me out as well as setting time aside just for my kids. This is definitely give and take for everyone involved.

6) Stay focused and motivated. Knows your "WHY".

7) Create a goal chart and hang it above your work area. That way you can see it everyday. I picked up a poster board. I used one half of the board and wrote down the goals that I have and the date that they will be achieved. Then on the right side of the poster board, I have pictures cut out and pasted on the board. If you are a visual person, this is great.... Maybe you have your dream house, washer and dryer, a certain landscaped lawn, a car, a picture of the ocean.... Whatever you desire, find a picture of it and put it up on your board.

8) Utilize all the tools that are available for your business. Don't limit yourself. Dip into everything your company has... Become an asset.

9) If you have to talk on the phone, STAND UP..... Take posture. Don't sit and slouch because that does come through over the phone.

10) Keep yourself in check. This is your company. Would you hire or fire yourself? Would you want to work with someone like yourself ?

Today, we are chatting with Julia, the mom behind Monkey Beanz, whose business grew out of a desire to stay at home with her daughter and stay connected with Thailand's culture and people after moving from Thailand to the U.S.. Here, she talks about how she got started in her business and shares how she juggles family and work at home, and more!

Who is Monkey Beanz and what is so unique about the products you sell on your website? Where are you located?
Monkey Beanz is a fair trade focused importer of top quality kids’ clothes and toys from Thailand. Our handmade toys and nursery décor are all made from cloth using bright colors and creative ideas to engage children rather than battery operated plastics. We choose toys and décor that allow children to use their imagination in order to entertain. Our clothing line is a fresh take on kids’ clothes. We design clothes and choose fabrics that are hip and modern yet very play-friendly. We often have grown ups wanting our designs made in their sizes!

How did you come up with your business name?
This was, by far, the easiest part of starting a business! Before our first daughter was born we referred to her as “bean” since we chose not to find out the sex. After she was born, her active personality soon transformed the nickname into monkey bean. When we first started talking about starting the business, it just fit perfectly.

When and why did you decide to start your own business?
We first started thinking about it when we began planning our move from Thailand to the US when our oldest daughter was about a year and a half. It felt very important to me to be a stay at home mom and also to maintain a connection to our Thai family and culture. When my husband’s visa was approved to move here, we started thinking, “How can we bring some of Thailand to families in the US?”

We figured out very quickly what kind of business we wanted to be – one that supports, not exploits, Thai people. One that embraces that our products are made with such skill and love by Thai citizens, not hides that “Made in (insert third world country here)” label. One that is proud of each of our products and excited to bring them to our customers.

How did you get started?
It has been a long and bumpy and very challenging journey. We had already discovered the great local Thai company that creates the cloth toys and nursery décor we sell so that part was fairly easy – we just bought some samples to take back with us. The clothing line has literally become like our third child and has gone through many of both the good and bad developmental stages. My husband, Bee, is an artist (and I am quite clear about what I like and don’t like!) so we just started talking and sketching to design the clothes. We have worked with various seamstresses from Bee’s home village in the south of Thailand to make our ideas come to life. Some relationships have worked, others have not but we have tried to take it in stride knowing that even those that didn’t succeed for Monkey Beanz at least succeeded in supporting a Thai woman with a family and not a factory. Nuung is the woman who now runs the show producing our new summer line and she is an amazing woman, mother and seamstress. She has helped us create a line that I am incredibly proud of and still makes me giddy every time I get to show it off to someone new.

What motivates you to keep your business going?
My family, without a doubt, and my absolute belief in our vision for Monkey Beanz. There have been times since moving to the US when I questioned whether we could pull it off. Yet, every time I had doubts, or was just incredibly stressed out and tired, I envisioned the success of Monkey Beanz, the satisfaction that we created this on our own, that we were helping out Thailand, that we had truly found a way of bringing the two cultures of our family together as a means to support ourselves. I just couldn’t pass that up and I have always believed it would happen; I just was never sure how long it would take us to get there!

Do you have a particular product that is a best seller on your site?
Our mobiles are really popular baby gifts. A mobile is usually on every parent’s list for the new baby and babies truly do love the colors and shapes on Monkey Beanz cloth mobiles.

How do you advertise your business? Which methods proved successful/effective?
Since the market for children’s products is huge and our advertising budget is at the opposite end of the size spectrum, we rely mainly on word of mouth to get ourselves out there. We participate in local markets and events and try to get ourselves into local publications as often as we can. As a mom, I am involved in various local mothering communities which are always a great resource. We also have several local women’s business networking groups which are an invaluable place to learn and promote.

How do you juggle family and work at home?
I’m not sure that I have found the answer to this question yet! I do try, not always successfully, to put my family first so at times when I’ve noticed my health and patience really suffering I have taken breaks from the business. Towards the end of my second pregnancy last year, I was becoming very run down and finally listened to family telling me that the business would be waiting for me in a few months but this pregnancy and the birth of our child were a one shot deal. This is advice I have a hard time following but try to keep in mind during the WAHM juggle/struggle.

What advice would you give to moms seeking to become a WAHM?
I think most WAHMS would agree that you really must love what you do and know why you are doing it. There will be challenges but as long as you can keep your goal and your vision in mind, you will be able to get past the hurdles. Also, use your resources. We have had endless hours of help from local business counselors, friends and family who are accountants, lawyers, photographers, marketing and PR agents. If people offer their help, use it!!

[The WAHM Spot]: Who is I Love Photo Gifts? Where are you located?
[I Love Photo Gifts]: ilovephotogifts.com is owned by a sentimental mom in NJ who is constantly on the search for unique high quality custom photo gifts, art and accessories. Not being a photo mug or mousepad kind of girl, I knew there had to be more out there! I am always
searching for artists and other mom owned business that create unique items that will
help consumers cherish, store and display their precious memories.

[The WAHM Spot]: How did you come up with your business name?
[I Love Photo Gifts]: The business originally began back in 2003 as Expressions Photo Design and many customer still know us as that name. We just re-branded based on feedback from many people we admire that we needed something easier to remember, something that clearly stated what we did. So, ilovephotogifts.com seemed perfect! I love photo gifts and most of my customers love photo gifts, so it will be easy to remember!
[The WAHM Spot]: When and why did you decide to start your own business?
[I Love Photo Gifts]: In 2002 I gave birth to my best gift ever, and I began my search for the perfect baby book-which I never found. We have no family, it is just the 3 of us. When I began reading through these baby books I realized how many empty pages there would be do to our having no family to fill in the blanks. So I began what was called digital scrapbooking
and created a custom photo baby book and had it bound at a professional bindery. The response by my friends was overwhelming, from this interest I also started doing custom photo art including collages and pop art. This was the core of my business until around 2006 when I decided to start offering gifts, not what everyone else was carrying, but different gifts, hard to find upscale gifts. Two years later I have what i think is the most unique photo gift store on the web and am loving every minute of it!

[The WAHM Spot]: How did you get started?
[I Love Photo Gifts]: Inspiration from friends started me on the path of local trade shows to gauge interest in my custom photo art and books. I had an overwhelming response and received several orders. A few months later I started my first website, and although I did not get much business from it, I did not give up. I kept modifying my site to make it more user friendly to the site that exists today.
[The WAHM Spot]: What motivates you to keep your business going?
[I Love Photo Gifts]: PURE PASSION! I am driven and I am determined to make this work for so many reasons. My husband has been my biggest supporter both emotionally and financially no matter how bad my ideas may be. I need to not let him down. I need to be a role model to my daughter that she can BE and DO anything that her little heart desires. And of course the emails I get from customers telling me about the joys of giving a gift they purchased from me, or the emails from the recipients. I have a job that makes people happy, there is nothing better!

[The WAHM Spot]: Do you have a particular product that's a best seller on your site?
[I Love Photo Gifts]: The jewelry and photo insert totes are by far our best sellers. I am thrilled to be working with some of the best jewelry artists many that are exclusively working with ilovephotogifts.com who said they would not do retail online! I have been blessed to locate some
amazing talent![The WAHM Spot]: How do you advertise your business? Which methods proved successful/effective?
[I Love Photo Gifts]: Tricky questions here! In 2006 I spent a HUGE sum of money on local and online advertising, all in all it was a complete waste of money. I have not done ANY advertising since. NONE! I concentrate on SEO, word of mouth referrals, taking care of the customers I have and online networking. The growth is definitely slow, but it is steady. There has yet to be one thing that has brought me any great traffic or sales successes. I think if there was an easy way to do this, we would all be doing it!

[The WAHM Spot]: How do you juggle family and work at home?
[I Love Photo Gifts]: Badly! I am completely absorbed in the business at this time and thankfully have a husband who is comepletely supportive. I feel like I am at that point where I am finally getting it to "the next level" and work about 15 hours a day right now. I do take a break from about 3-5 to spend some time with my daughter and get dinner ready...then my husband takes over. But it will not always be this way! My family IS My priority which is why
I am working this hard!

[The WAHM Spot]: What advice would you give to moms seeking to become a WAHM?
[I Love Photo Gifts]: My one advice is to really sit down and evaluate why and how you will implement a business. I did mine with NO plan at all and wasted a ton of time and money. It is only the last 6 or so months that I really felt like I have direction and a goal. And do not believe all the lines of "you can start a business on $29.95" things you hear and read. You cannot just put a website up and expect them to come. I can go on for hours about this topic!!!!

If you are SERIOUS about a business, do a business plan, evaluate your market potential, how are you different from your competition. Start off on the right foot and be professional in your image..meaning.. well designed business cards and promotional materials, website and product packaging. These are all things I failed in building my "brand", but am making up for it now. And it is extremely important to have a supportive family, I know many women who have tried to do their own business only to be deterred by husbands who did not believe in them.

Interview with: RC Art Toys

I had the greatest pleasure to interview Ms. Gwen Austin, the mom behind RC Art Toys. A toy inventor who pushed forward, headstrong with an idea conceived ten years ago and now a dream come true, Ms. Austin shares her experiences from giving life to her idea, to patenting her design, and on how she manages to juggle everything at home.

Who is RC Art Toys? Where are you located?
RC Art Toys is a Denver-based toy company specializing in radio-controlled art toys.

How did you come up with your business name?
RC ART TOYS describes the toy line ...RC is an industry standard for "radio controlled" art toys.

When and why did you decide to start your own business?
I had wanted to be a toy inventor for over 10 years. I had an idea but it got pushed aside with "life" . That toy sat in a box in my basement for 10 years until the birth of my girls. I looked at them as babies and realized that for me to teach them to dream, I needed to pursue my own even if it meant failing. With a 2 1/2 year old and a 1 year old at home with me, I sent out an email to a trust industry source. Within weeks I had a designer, engineer and lawyer all working to help make this dream come true. I was told back then that only 5% of new toy companies succeed. I was determined to be a part of that 5%. Two year later, I finally have a finished product and am eager to create a strong growing business.

What sparked you to design your first toy, RC Color Bug? What's so special about this new toy?
The idea is over 10 years old. I had to come up with a toy for a design class that moved 10 inches. While brainstorming, my dog scooted across the floor in front of me. Long story short, this inspired me to create a toy that moved leaving a mark in its wake. The final concept is radio-controlled art.

The Color Bug is the spin-off of the initial design. The Color Bug, is a ladybug shaped RC toy that draws on art surfaces using markers that snap into the toy. Using the toy’s RC controller, kids create colorful art by steering turns and spins of the motorized Color Bug providing a fun, action-packed toy. There is a second product half way through prototype stage as well.

How did you get started? What steps did you take to get funding, your design patented, made, and your product finally on the shelves?
The first step was the hardest...trusting someone enough to get the ball rolling. I had a hard time with this but finally decided that I needed to ask someone for help or I could never move forward. I made a phone call to a trusted source in the industry and told him of my idea. Within days I had the name of a designer and engineer who would help me turn this concept into reality. At the same time, I contacted a law firm and began the process for patenting the idea. The biggest piece of knowledge I can share is that I didn't know 1/100th of what I know now back then. I started and learned each step along the way. When the time came to manufacture, my engineer helped make a connection and I began to learn what I needed to know. Then came the packaging, yet another expert to help guide my vision. I learned to bring together a strong team of people who knew everything that I needed to learn.

Will we see a new toy in the near future? If so, can you tell us a little bit about it?
There is a new toy in the prototype stage and is expected to appear at Toy Fair 2009.

What motivates you to keep your business going?
I love what I'm doing and am excited to be getting such a great response. There are days that I definitely need a little kick and I have a great support group of fellow entrepreneurs as well as a great mom who keeps pushing me forward. I think there are days when every entrepreneur looks at themselves and wonders why they think they can make this work but you work through those days and try to surround yourself with positive, motivating sources.

How do you advertise your business? Which methods proved successful/effective?
So far I've done all the advertising through media - print, tv and online. I also exhibit at the NYC Toy Fair and that's been the best way to make retail contacts. I think that exhibiting at the shows is a must to get yourself out there to the retailers.

How do you juggle family and work at home?
I've learned to do different tasks at different times of day. When my kids are at school or during nap times, I can make phone calls or schedule appointments. If they are playing and don't need my immediate attention, I am able to get computer work done. I do quite a bit of work in the evenings after bedtime. You get sections of time and learn quickly to use them wisely.

What advice would you give to moms like you who want to get their products/inventions out there (lessons learned)?
1. You need to surround yourself with the people who know what you don't and learn to trust them but at the same time don't be afraid to take the reins. While they know the process, you know what your vision is so there should be a balance between the two.
2. When you are starting, don't feel the need to tell everyone that you have this great new business you are starting. Unfortunately, you will be greeted with a negativity. It is very hard for some people to understand why you would be starting a business or perhaps they are jealous or insecure so the reaction becomes unsupportive. It is very important to keep positive energy around you and the best way to do it is find support from other entrepreneurs.
3. Just because someone tells you no, doesn't mean you need to give up. Never give up on your dream but at the same time, make sure that you are pursuing it in the best way possible.

Special Spot Review: theWAHMmagazine

To all fellow WAHMs out there - there's a magazine just for us!

Erika Geiss, founder and editor of theWAHMmagazine, brings to work-at-home moms (and dads too!) a fabulous content-driven digital magazine that addresses all the challenges and triumphs of working from home.

I was very fortunate to get a sneak peek at the magazine's second issue. Not only does it cover the nitty gritty issues pertaining to business management, but it also covers other important issues such as parenting, health and fitness, relationships, leisure, humor (a must-have to stay sane in our WAHM lives!), time management, real-life WAHM stories and more.

The digital format took a little time to get used to, but once I got the handle of zooming in and out and scrolling up and down each page, I was flipping those pages as though they were from a physical magazine. I like that the magazine is eco-friendly, saving paper AND helping reduce clutter, a plus that has quickly won me over!

Articles range from the informative, "Insuring Your Home-Based Business" (from The Nitty Gritty feature), to the short laughs such as "8 Reasons We Hate Working from Home" (from The Grab Bag). The magazine flows well, and it doesn't overwhelm you with "The Nitty Gritty" articles all at once. It ebbs and flows from parenting to relationship issues to health and fitness then back to "The Nitty Gritty" articles. I especially like the featured articles on "Stories from the Trenches," where WAHMs give first-person accounts of what it's really like to work from home such as dealing with Work-at-home Mom Guilt. The parenting feature introduces you to life as a single WAHM, juggling free-lance writing and home-schooling, and working from home with a special needs child. Then the magazine treats you to some articles on Relaxation and Rejuvenation, offering professional photography and gardening tips and "Finding Peace in the Chaos."

theWAHMmagazine is smart, engaging, useful, entertaining and relevant to the aspects of WAHM life. So how can you get theWAHMmagazine? Meet the Mom Behind "My House Boutique!"

Who says being a WAHM is no fun? This WAHM is having a blast creating and designing children's play food! Come see how she got started in this fun craft!

Who is My House Boutique? Where are you located?
My House Boutique is a mother-owned and operated specialty store that currently sells play food, sewing patterns and hand-dyed dolls (late June).

My House Boutique is located in a sunny little craft room in Austin, Texas!

How did you come up with your business name?
Does anyone remember the song, "Come On-a My House," sung by the maid in Alvin and the Chipmunks? Well, that song stuck to me as a kid, and I still find myself singing, "Come on-a my house, my house, I'm gonna feed you candy..." and I thought to my self that My House Boutique sounded pretty nice.

When and why did you decide to start your own business?
I started sewing seven years ago, but it wasn't until I stumbled upon the craft blogging world that I became inspired to make toys of my own to sell. My heart's desire is to eventually stay at home taking care of my daughter, sewing, and writing.

How did you get started?
I first started making pocket-sized baby dolls, then ventured into craft felt and am constantly inspired by everyday foods.

What motivates you to keep your business going?
You know, starting your own business from merely an idea can be a challenge as you are constantly convincing yourself that one day your work will become a profitable venture. I've been donating a lot of toys to charitable fund-raisers and the feedback is encouraging.

Which Play Food proves to be a best seller on your site?
The veggie salad is a best seller and I think it's because of the vibrant colors and true-to-life shapes and sizes.

How do you advertise your business? Which methods proved successful/effective?
I sold on Etsy for a while and was able to network and promote My House Boutique, but one of the downfalls of selling on a community website is that the environment can be very competitive.

How do you juggle family and work at home?
I'm juggling right now (smile)! When I first started I would get up around five a.m. and sew, then take care of my daughter in the mornings, go to work, then sew after my daughter was asleep. I think I exhausted myself that way and am looking for a more effective way to grow My House Boutique's business. Now that my daughter is getting older, she is interested in "helping" with many tasks.

What advice would you give to moms seeking to become a WAHM?
My advice to moms seeking to become a WAHM is to consider what idea impresses you the most and do your research on the product/ service. Dream big, but start small. Fortify your business on a small scale (i.e. serve your local area and provide quality work) and advertise creatively. The more you work to impress yourself, the more people will notice.
